Extra skin?

I thought I would ask the subject matter experts this question. Now, I know that age and heredity play a part, but do lightweights generally have less lose skin when they reach their goat weight? I'm having RNY next month and my husband is getting a little worried. He keeps hearing all kinds of horror stories about having enough extra skin to soar like the flying squirrels! LOL I tell him I would rather tuck 5 pounds of skin than carry 100 extra pounds around for the rest of my life! But since I really don't know what to expect, I hope you wonderful people can help. Thanks!

Well I had my RNY on March 14th of this year.  I have gone from 226 to 142 and I have to say with clothes on I look pretty good but without clothes on yuck.  I am 38 and I have 3 kids.  If you have a lot of stretch marks they just become a wrinkly mess.  I thought I was going to be lucky and not have bat wings because i never really had huge arms but I was wrong.  I don't think I would ever go sleeveless.  My arms are very skinny but when I lift them up I have hanging skin that I hate.  Would I change having this surgery no way.  I have 17 pounds to go to my goal weight.  I was very big chested to begin with and I have to say I have no chest now.  It is pretty sad. LOL  Oh well my hubby still loves me HEHE.  Good luck you will do great.

I think this really depends on each individual person...I think exercise will help...I have some extra skin on my arms that drives me nuts otherwise its not that bad..oh and the girls are deflated but thats okay would rather have all that then have an extra hundred pounds...I guess its all in perspective!

The rule of thumb is: for every 10 lb. lost, 1 lb. of excess skin. So, if you lose 100, you will have around 10 lb. of excess.

You may have more or you may have less. It may be in obvious spots that can be lopped off. It may be in less obvious spots and/or you can't lop it off.

For example, I have excess skin on my calves but there really isn't anything that can be done about it and it's not so bad that other people notice. I have excess on my face and something can be done about it but it's so little it's probably not worth it. I have a visible panus and my butt is lower than a butt should be and my boobs are deflated. I also have wrinkles on my arms, but not much in the way of bat-wings. All those can be fixed and are probably worth fixing. If I want to spend money on that. So far, I haven't.

I suspect I do have about 10 lb. of excess skin but, if I had PS, I'd probably only lose 5-7 lb. of it because it's all over and not all in a place you can have removed.

I do believe it has alot to do with genetics and what MacMadame has said actually makes sense to me. I had my RNY 8/31/10 and have lost a total of about 80 pounds as of right now, I will be 36 and I have 4 children. That beind said, my arms are not so bad I cant wear a sleevless shirt, my legs are jiggly but with some excercise will work itself out. My stomach,my boobs and my arm pit area are my hot spots...I have ALWAYS had a bad panni so it is really there now, boobs deflated but that is workable and my arm pit area, I need to make sure I wear shape wear or even a wide sided bra to hold that in...Will I have PS later, probably not. Im ok with it (as of right now )

There are a few fortunate people who don't end up with loose skin, but the majority of us have or will.

I lost 93 lbs and had a panni that hung below my pubic bone.  My arms are good, my legs are jiggly, but manageable.  I had a tummy tuck and the Dr took off 1.5 lbs of skin.  I also had a breast lift/augmentation.  I'm not sure how much was taken off for the lift, but I'd dare say less than a lb there too.

I initially wanted a lower body lift too, but my weight has redistributed and I've put on a few lbs and they went to my legs/butt/thighs so now they really aren't too bad.  Still jiggle but I can live with them.

Oh, and I'm 52.

I think you have the right attitude regarding you'd rather carry around some loose skin than 100 extra pounds.  My insurance also paid for my tummy tuck... so that may be an option for you in the future too.

Thanks everyone for the great answers! Now I know! My husband loved me when I was skinny, and he still loves me now. I don't think some extra skin will scare him away! lol  Besides, as long as I'm healthy again, I know we'll both be happy with the outcome.
