pre-op diet thoughts
hey everyone just a quick question i have just finished day 5 of my pre-op liquid diet and feel horrible cuz sadly i did cheat today. i was upset at myself earlier but now im just like u know it just cant happen again it was only one meal. i kinda just dont want to beat myself up abt it anymore, i know im going to have to have better control over my food demons though to successfully lose/maintain weight though.. so my question is what has worked for any of you to keep you on track without the usual self insults.
First of all, please don't beat yourself up. Liquid diets for LW pre-ops is a gimmick or cookie cutter approach some surgeons use. You're a LW and not 200 pounds overweight. If you want to mix your liquid diet with one high protein low carb meal at night, it's going to be ok. If you had perfect control and no metabolism issues, you wouldn't need WLS. No worries.

Whether pre- or post-survery, none of us is perfect. We all are going to take a bite we shouldn't at one time or another. Thanks goodness our 4 week pre-surgery diet did include 1 food meal a day or I wouldn't have made it. For me, I try to just accept whatever and move on. In my old diet history, a mistake could mean the end, why bother, I can't do it. But now, with the support here and my new tummy, I know I can. If it helps, we could have all the celery and cucumbers we wanted. If you have to eat something, those aren't going to hurt you or your loss.

Don't beat yourself up. Like Gina (majormom) said, it's a gimmike and the ONLY reason for one is to ease the amount of fat around the liver. NOT to see how well you comply.
None of us have perfect control over our food intake...have you ever since a skinny person eat? They do not deprive themselves of stuff they like, they just have better control over how much they eat. That's part of the tool we are given, to learn how smaller portions are just as satisfying. I don't deny myself anything but eating a bite or two is all I need versus a handful or plateful or bagful as before.
Unfortunately, unlike alcohol or any other addiction, we must have food to sustain our body, we can't quit completely ever. So we learn to control the amount we eat and how often.
I am a grazer, one reason a DS was perfect for me. But now I graze on much smaller portions and I am mindful of what I am putting in my mouth. In spite of still eating pasta (on occasion and paying for it in gas) and bread, I am still losing. My sandwiches went from two pieces of bread to one (I make mine into a half or share it with my husband)And since I use the deli flats, one half serving is 11 carbs versus the 22 a whole serving.
Food is not the enemy. But we have to learn to eat to live, not live to eat.

I wouldn't worry about it. On my pre-op diet I can eat one lean meal a day. As Gina said it is a gimmick for lightweights to do the diet. My suergon told me, being a light weight my liver is most likely fine, and it is more for those severly obese. I start my diet in 1 week and 1 day, I hope I can do it.
I have such mixed feelings about the pre-op liquid diet.....as many said, we are not as much in the worry zone as far as shrinking our liver.....YET I didn't want to harm myself in any way....so I did a 9 day liquid diet instead of 14 and I "cheated" a few times on: high protein items (cheese twice), little ice cream (twice) and some turkey breast. You messed up a bit......no biggie.
After surgery you won't immediately feel hungry (like you do now) and you won't be able to indulge so STOP beating yourself up. Hang in there!!!!!!!!!!
p.s. for me the liquid diet got easier as the days went on....i got used to being hungry and I also made my protein shakes BIGGER to help with the hunger.
