I had RNY 6-3-11 & I've only lost 10lbs. I feel it should be more. -I'm a little discouraged and a little depressed. I'm afraid my expectations are too high. I may also be a little hormonal. I've been too tired to exercise. I'm hoping to regain my energy soon so I can't wait told see how much exercise might effect my weight loss
Am I expecting too much too soon?

Please stop! I think you are putting way too much pressure on yourself.  I had RNY on 3/8/11 and have "only" lost 29 pounds since surgery.  BUT, I also lost 27 before surgery, can now run 1.5 miles straight and did a 6.5 hr hike this weekend.  When people look at me, I am straddling the fence of being looked at as overweight to being "normal" sized (a place I have not been in 20 years!).  This is NOT just about numbers.  Some people lose fast (and you may end up being one of them) and others don't.  Seriously, take a breath....it will all work out!!!

Thank you! Sounds like you're doing awesome! Did you have a major loss of energy after your surgery? If so, how soon did it come back? I'm 42 and it's been a while since I've been as active as I would like to be. I can't wait to go on a 6.5 hour hike. That's a major accomplishment.

So 10 pounds in 5 days?? When's the last time you've done that?

Don't beat yourself up.  You're doing great.  AND - don't compare yourself to others who weigh more than you did going into surgery.  Its all about percentages and you're right on target.

Yes, I was tired for several weeks, and I wouldn't advise doing any kind of strenuous exercise, but walking is highly recommended.  Let your body heal, it just went through major surgery.

I actually had surgery 6-3-11. Maybe I am being unrealistic but my disappointment feels very real. My depression may be hormonal, but still very real. I thought this may be a way to get some help via member experiences and tips to work through my possible "overly high" expectations and very real depression. It may be better if I simply take some time, waiting to see if it works out on it's own.

Sorry I was whinny.

Ahh - ok.  That's over a month.

Like the others said, it could also depend on how much you lost pre-op.

I know we all have expectations, I did too and its tough when you don't see the numbers you want to see when you want to see them.

Did you take measurements prior to surgery? That's one thing that helped me keep my sanity during this process, especially early out.  There is the usual 3 week stall, that's about 3 weeks after surgery your body just stops and says "huh?  what did you do to me" and takes a break for a few weeks, BUT you'll notice your clothes are getting looser, etc.

Hang in there, sorry I was tough with you, thought it was just 5 days.  It will happen!!

No matter what you lose at any point in this process, you can't judge how fast you are losing by your absolute pounds lost. You have to focus on the % of excess weight loss. That's because someone with 200 pounds to lose has to lose 2x as many pounds each week to be losing as fast as someone with only 100 pounds to lose.

(I edit out my answer because I also thought it was 10 pounds in 5 days so the first part didn't apply.)

I'm kind of a control freak and I wanted to take charge of my weight loss and see results. Some things you can do to help you feel more in control is to count your carbs and your protein grams. Put them in a diet diary or track them on one of the automated diet journals. Track your water and your vitamins and even how often you get shorts walks or exercise in. Basically, track everything.

Record your weight every week but weigh every morning. Take your measurements and record those every month. You may see your measurements going down even if the scale isn't. If you start to see a slow down in your weight, you can look at your diary and try to figure out what you're doing that may be causing it and change something up...like increase your protein and decrease your carbs. Increase your water and walk 2 more time a day. If you take control, you may feel better and if you do truly stall for over a month, you have something to take the dietitian or show us here and you can get suggestions.

Hope this helps.

The measurements will pull you through the hard times. Keep working your plan and you will succeed!!! I keep bouncing around from 196 to 197 this week and focused on getting extra protein yesterday and it works!!!!

Hang in there

You had major surgery and you are only a month out.  Yes, you are tired.  It will take a while to get your energy back.  How was your D3 level before surgery?  Mine was low and my energy came back around the same time I got it up.  Did you get levels drawn before surgery?  Might want to post those.
From your ticker, looks like you lost some before surgery and don't have that much more to lose.  With the fluids that we get for surgery, that 10 probably isn't all you lost cause you had to get rid of that too.  It will happen as long as you are following the program.

Look at your NSV, non scale victories.  For me, everyday that I followed my Drs plan, was a win, whether I lost weight or not.  Staying on program, getting in your fluid and protein, keeping your carbs where they should be, is all part of learning a new lifestyle that will help you make the loss permanent, not just another one that we gain back.

chin up, hang around, we'll help.
