Ok guys, I'm gong to ask you to answer these questions. You don't have to have an answer for every single one, just answer what you want or ask more questions.

1) Why do you need extra water and fluids?

2) Do we WLS folks "malabsorb" water?

3) What is it about your new anatomy that requires you to drink so much more water/fluids?

4) What happens if you get dehydrated?

5) What are the signals and symptoms of dehydration?

6) What can you do about dehydration if you are unable to drink or keep fluids down?

7) Are there little tricks to making water more agreeable to your stomach? What are they?

8) What minerals can tank if you get dehydrated?

9) Can you count your coffee and diet sodas as a part of your daily intake of fluids?

(Please watch your tone if you don't agree. No wars of words, please and thank you.)

I will try but not sure if i know all the answers.

1) Why do you need extra water and fluids?
To prevent dehydration

2) Do we WLS folks "malabsorb" water? I dont think anyone can malabsorb water

3) What is it about your new anatomy that requires you to drink so much more water/fluids? Im thinking the smaller stomach makes it harder to get in as much as a "normal" sized stomach

4) What happens if you get dehydrated? Well overall the ultimate can be death, but memory loss, dizziness, heart palpatations

5) What are the signals and symptoms of dehydration? See above I will also add in with my my bladder and kidneys HURT and I get extra constipated

6) What can you do about dehydration if you are unable to drink or keep fluids down? Head to the ER for IV fluids

7) Are there little tricks to making water more agreeable to your stomach? What are they? ANY way possible, drink luke warm, add lemon, add crystal light, heck I put anything in it to make it go down better

8) What minerals can tank if you get dehydrated? I really dont know,

9) Can you count your coffee and diet sodas as a part of your daily intake of fluids?

Well considering it is a fluid yes but remember that unless it is decaf it can add to dehydration

1) Why do you need extra water and fluids? Because we eat less fiber and can get constapated.

2) Do we WLS folks "malabsorb" water? Don't think so

3) What is it about your new anatomy that requires you to drink so much more water/fluids?  Humm, I'm thinking the less digestive track has something to do with it, plus the less fiber part.

4) What happens if you get dehydrated?  Irritability, over-heating leading to heat stroke, constipation, confusion

5) What are the signals and symptoms of dehydration? irritablility, thirst, overheating

6) What can you do about dehydration if you are unable to drink or keep fluids down? change the temp of the water.  Add stuff to it.

7) Are there little tricks to making water more agreeable to your stomach? What are they? same as above, lemon, crystal light, etc.

8) What minerals can tank if you get dehydrated? Electrolites, calcuim, mag, pottasium

9) Can you count your coffee and diet sodas as a part of your daily intake of fluids? Decaf yes, caffine no, sodas no.

Great topic Gina.

1. 64 oz is the basic reccomendation for all folks, unless you are a heart or kidney patient. These people can survive on 32oz or less a day.
We need our fluids just like everyone else.

2. I dont think so.

3. For me, something with my new plumbing requires more liquid to help combat constipation, (sorry tmi)

4. You feel like crap!

5. Thirst, headache,  dizziness when standing up. Concentrated urine, nausea, throwing up and just not feeling well.

6. Try one teaspoon  every 5 or 10 minutes and if that doesnt work go to the er for iv fluids.

7. Try different temperatures, I  can get down room temp or warm liquids down faster than something ice cold. Not to mention all the add ins we have to make water more palatable. Love my brita filter, miss my reverse osmosis, the handle broke. Nothing like water without a taste or smell.

8. I am not sure about minerals tanking, but I do know that sodium can rise to a dangerously high level and cause seizures. If you really are dehydrated too, it can cause your kidneys to start to fail.
Concentrates calcium and oxolates which can contribute to kidney stone formation.

9. I thought one can count all the liquids that are decaf toward their fluid intake.

Hi Gina!

1.  Keeps our innards functioning properly.  Helps lose weight.
2.  Yes, water is absorbed through the stomach and since ours are little now, we don't have ability to absorb all we drink
3.  Because we do malabsorb water, we just need all that more to compensate (just like our vitamins)
4.  You feel bad, get dizzy, can pass out, your heart/lungs/brain won't function properly, overheat
5.  dizziness, fogginess, shakiness
6.  Go to the ER and get fluids intraveneously
7.  line and lemon and a little splenda (I listen to you!)
8.  Hmmm... this one I'm not sure of
9.  No you shouldn't as they are technically diuretics

1) Why do you need extra water and fluids? Because the shortened portion of our anatomy can't absorb as much as before...simple math.

2) Do we WLS folks "malabsorb" water? Not in the short part we have left but because it's so much shorter, we "malabsorb"

3) What is it about your new anatomy that requires you to drink so much more water/fluids? Well, I only have a small amount of intestines left for absorbtion. Quite a bit is off to the side for the bile before it is reattached back as part of the Common Channel.

4) What happens if you get dehydrated? Low blood pressure, skin doesn't bounce back when pinched, posterual or orthostatic hypertension, shock if low enough.

5) What are the signals and symptoms of dehydration? Dry mouth, low to no urine output and what is there is dark yellow, no tears.

6) What can you do about dehydration if you are unable to drink or keep fluids down? Go to the doc/ER and get help, usually in the form of IV fluids.

7) Are there little tricks to making water more agreeable to your stomach? What are they? Add flavors, change the temp, drink other fluids such as milk/juices.

8) What minerals can tank if you get dehydrated? Any water soluable ones such as Vit B.

9) Can you count your coffee and diet sodas as a part of your daily intake of fluids? Not suppose to unless it's decaf and then not as your major source.

I probably don't know the correct answer to many of the questions, but I'll try.

1.  To help with weight loss-full feeling and to keep from getting dehydrated - helps with constipation issues also.

2.  I wouldn't think so.

3.  Shorter intestines???

4.  Dizzy, nausea, - pretty serious stuff

5.  The things we were told to watch for on my FIL was darker colored or no urine output, test skin by pulling up at the top of his hand and if it bounced back he was probably ok - I think dehydration takes the elasticity out of your skin.

6.  Go to the ER and get IV-Fluids!!!

7.  Adding things to the water such as crystal lite/lemon/lime juices.  Make it room temperature and not so cold.

8.  No idea

9.  I think this is an ongoing debate some say you can and some say you can't.  I personally only count it if it is decaf.

Great topic Gina.
