RNY and the "nervous stomach"

i have never dealt with any kind of 'stress' well.  when i was a kid, i would be sick for 2 weeks before christmas.  it's still happening, except i'm nervous/excited if those receiving gifts will be happy.  it's still 2 weeks before christmas.

any kind of upset ruins my body.  i get loose bm's, lots of gas, and my belly is rolling over, churning away with acid.  right now i have several stressors in my life.  emotional, financial, and the upcoming surgery, of course.

people telling me i cant be doing this to my new pouch just makes it worse.  i cant control my bodys response like that- can anyone?

anyway, am i going to be getting an ulcer?  i know we are on some good acid meds afterwards, but i may need something stronger, i would think.  my nervous belly is not what 'normal' people experience as they go thru their lives...  surely normal people dont get loose poopies for 2 weeks before christmas!  i'm munching on tums and they arnt working.

was this surgery a bad choice?  dont tell me- i dont want to hear it    no, really, i'm worried because i worry too much.  is there help for me?

No Pouch here...but I had the nerves prior to surgery. Diarrhea over everything. Lots of sleepless nights worrying about everything. I Am not nearly as bad now. I don't know if it has to do with the surgery or if I am just focusing on the positive because I am on a post-op high!!!! LOL. Consider the bowel issues a blessing -- I have yet to be constipated!!

Hope your day is good!!!

I think that is a good thing to talk to your Dr about.  I had a cast iron stomach before surgery and now a tiny cast iron pouch.  If anything, I tend towards being constapated, never diarreah.  Gas, yes, before and after surgery.

I know after reading, I did talk to my Surgeon about constapation before surgery and he said, no problem.  We will just be sure you get 35g of fiber a day.  Looking back, that is pretty rediculous considering what and how much we can eat.  But I have done fine with a big dose of benefiber daily and veggies.

Others with sensitive tummys may be more help but I do think you need to let your Dr know.

Does your program offer psych?

Maybe someone could work with you regarding stress management. Meditation or yoga are other ways to learn how to calm the mind and settle the body.

Great advice for talking with the doc just so he knows how delicate your tummy is.

Good luck!

hi maria.  thanks for the reply.  i think i need to do more on my own.  our co-pays are pretty high for our finances ($40 a pop!).  meditation and yoga are great ideas!  thanks for the suggestions!

RNY on 04/07/09 with

i struggle with anxiety as well, and it was pretty bad in my twenties before i really made some efforts to get it under control. this book helped alot: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Natural-Relief-for-Anxiety/ Edmund-J-Bourne/e/9781572243729?r=1&cm_mmc=Google%20Product% 20Search-_-Q000000630-_-Natural%20Relief%20for%20Anxiety-_-9 781572243729

at that time i cut out caffeine, sugar, and cigarettes and started meditating and practicing deep breathing exercises. i also got some natural remedies like valerian root tea.

i also was in therapy for a few years and it helped tremendously. personally, i was against medication but i know it works for many. now, i really only get anxious about major life changes and airplane rides.

You can also try mint tea. It is soothing on the stomach.  My husband has stomach issues that you describe including IBS.  The only real way to control it is anxeity meds which he refuses to take so he drinks a lot of pepermint tea, and at a vitamin store you can buy a pepermint capsul that  he takes as well.

Good luck.
