VSG for light weights???
Hi,
I am scheduled for surgery on July 18th with Dr. Ramos Kelly in Mexico. I am 5'7" and weigh about 197 lbs..bmi of 30 or 31...I wanted to know the experience of other low BMI patients like myself who have had VSG surgery. How was the recovery? How long did it take to drop the excess weight?? Is the weight staying off easily?? Any one have unsuccessful surgery? I know a lot of questions lol. I have been doing my homework but its great to have direct feed back. Last but not least, is anyone having any hair loss and malabsorption issues?
Thanks!!!

We have one person that comes around every now and then that started at 30-ish BMI an got VSG. As far as I know she's still right around goal. You may see her on the VSG board, BelizeSleeve is her screen name.

Welcome to the lightweights. I, also am a RNY but we do have some sleevers here that can give you more into, I bet.
Sleeves aren't suppose to have malabsorption issues except for the fact that they can't eat much to get their nutritian in. I think we all can/do lose hair, to one extent or another. That is related to the rapid loss.

I wasn't as light as you are now, but I'll answer. Yes, weight is coming off. I'm a slower loser than some. Recovery was easy except for the reflux, which I am still dealing with. I'm 6 mos out and still not at goal, which I am ok with. I'm close. I can't answer about maintenance at this point. Sorry this is so short--a little pressed for time. Good luck!

Good luck--remember that if you have any underlying issues (thyroid disease, PCOS, metabolic issues), your loss may be slower than you would like, even with working out a lot.
I forgot to add: yes, I am losing hair. I don't know about my vitamin/mineral levels yet--I go in next week to get that checked. I feel fine, though, so I am hoping everything is normal.

Good luck and welcome to the LW's...just a few stats to help you...I had 100 lbs I wanted to lose, and have dropped 80 in less than 7 months. Love my sleeve...don't have any medical issues that I have had to deal with except acid reflux. In the beginning, there was some dumping and I learned to stay far away from thoes foods. Hair loss, sad to say, has happened but I think I am on the rebound! Best of luck to you feel free to ask me any other questions, will be glad to help....Sherry
Welcome!
I'm a Sleever. Recovery was great. I was back to working from home on day 7. Back in the office the following week. I started at 249, was 229 on surgery morning. Rapid weight loss produces hair loss, regardless of the surgery.
We all lose at different paces. During months 4-6 I worked out 7 days a week, 5 days were 3 hours a day, 2 days were 2 hours. I worked out with a professional athlete that kept me motivated. During those months I shed 3-8 pounds a month. Calories were under 800. I was sure the weight would fly off but that hasn't been my story. Let your own story unfold because comparing yourself to others can be very depressing. I would never say my surgery wasn't successful, it just wasn't what I expected. Now at 17 months out from surgery I'm 4 pounds away from my 100 pound loss and 7 from a normal BMI. I was certain I'd have been there in 9-12 months. We don't get malabsorption with the VSG so we have to be sure to count every calorie that we ingest because they all get processed.
You're going to love your Sleeve and I bet it comes off you really quickly. Your surgery is right around the corner so good luck and let us know how your recovery goes!!!
