guess i'm more welcome here
Welcome to the LW board and glad you found us. The RNY and Main Board can be downright scary at times and I even tread lightly when I go there, mostly to lurk.
Sounds like you're doing an awesome service for the critters out there.
Looking forward to seeing more of you here and following your journey. When is your surgery?

Jenny, welcome to the LW Boards. Your work sounds so interesting. I have two granddaughters also. They are so much fun.
I also had diabetes, sleep apnea and high cholesterol. All gone except the cholesterol-it was better but back on medicine now - probably hereditary. Diabetes and sleep apnea both gone.
Be sure to keep us updated on your progress. Good luck,
Linda

Welcome, Jenny!!! Your stats are similar to mine. I am 4'11" and started out at 210, but lost 33 lbs pre-op, which put me at 177 at surgery. I had severe sleep apnea, pre-diabetes, hypertension, and beginning joint issues. ALL have resolved since surgery and I have never felt so well. WLS is the gift of health. You will feel so much healthier after your surgery and the weight falls off.

oh my gosh, gail! i am so excited to have this surgery so i can begin again! how long did it take you to reach your goal? i know a few people who have had it done, and one has complications and cant keep things down still, after 2 years. she needs to find another surgeon i think! the other one lost the weight, but still looks 'round' in the belly. she doesnt exercise for various reasons. i'm more determined to exercise!!!!!
Everyone is different and as a lightweight, your weight might come off more slowly, but it is all relative to the amount of weight that you have to lose. You can't really compare yourself to other people, but you will lose fairly rapidly for the first few months, then it tends to slow down to 1-2 lbs/week, especially with the less weight that you have to lose.
I did have some complications in the beginning and spent two weeks in the hospital, which accelerated my weight loss during that time. I had a VSG, but by the end of year, the weight loss is fairly comparable between the VSG and RNY. RNY folks may lose more weight in the beginning, but it evens out over the long run.
I exercise 4-5 times/week, weight train, which has helped some of the excess skin issues, but I do have some. I reached a high normal BMI at 5.5 months out, and my ultimate goal weight at 7.5 months out. My surgeon's goal was 140 and I said that was too high, and I wanted my goal to be 120. We compromised at 130. I flew by 130, entered the 120's, and kept doing what I was doing and reached 110 lbs in mid-April. My PCP thought I try to get to 110, and he was right.
Complications do happen, but they are more the rarity than real common. Things like nausea, etc are common. Sounds like your friend may have a stricture, which is keeping her from holding her food down.
As far as your friend who has a rounded belly, maybe she isn't at goal weight? Still has belly fat? Not exercising, will cause more loss of lean muscle tissue, and people will look and feel more flabby. Weight training is so important, for so many reasons. Also, maybe the rounded belly is excess skin?
Good luck with your surgery!!!

thanks so much for the information, gail. yeah, i know better than to compare myself to anyone, but i dont have any knowledge about lightweights and WLS, so was hoping to get any info about that. good to know your results and i know results do vary ;-) strength training will be on my list of things to do to get my belly fat outa here!.
i'm sorry you were in the hospital for a while, poor thing. i hope that doesnt happen with me. scared of the out of pocket stuff i may have to deal with, not so much the complication it'self, lol. hmmm, wacked priorities here?
i'm also thinking my friend may have a stricture. i'm worried about her, but she keeps taking things in stride and keeps little baggies with her when she eats.
it's coming quick! i can tell i'm gonna blink and the day will be here and gone! very excited to be on the other side of surgery!
