Bye bye birdie!!!
Butchered up 13 roosters last night. The freezer is filling up and only 10 more to go.
Yeehaw!!!
The next batch will definitely be all hens - these roosters have stolen every remaining scrap of sanity I had left. Hopefully they will release it all back to me now that they have no head

LOL!!! Actually all but 1 of the roosters were in a pen separate from the free range hens. But the one rooster who was free-range was quite busy with his "roosterly activities" and I'm sure the hens will be VERY happy he's gone. He was actually the first one we grabbed
Oh yeah...I know the neighbors will be happy too!

I had to laugh at this post. We used to get chickens at Easter and then in the summer time my dad and granddaddy would kill them and we would have a BBQ(from our pet chickens). I would be crying and crying while everyone was eating and one time my grandmother asked what in the world was wrong with me. I told her she was eating my pet - she couldn't eat anymore!!!
Your post brings back memories of our chickens running around with no heads after they had been wrung off - is that gruesome or what-LOL....

Yeah - I had no problems NOT getting attached to these!
We actually have a pretty humane way of killing them - if there really is a humane method for death.
They go upside down into this cone thing and then DH cuts the jugulars so they bleed out. But the nice thing is that the cone keeps them from flopping and running around. Much better because they don't break wings or legs this way and it keeps the meat in good condition.
I think its funny how people forget that the neatly wrapped meat they buy at the store didn't get that way naturally. Someone had to do the daunting task of taking a life.

I guess my parents grew up doing this so it was no big deal to them. I bet if a parent did that now it would be horrible. We all got over it and now it is a story we all laugh about - weird I know.
Your way does sound better, because that is the main thing I remember is the flopping and running around!!

My four year old is just finding out and realizing that the chicken she eats is from a chicken, beef from a cow etc... she told me the other day that she did not want to eat anything anymore b/c she didn't want the animals to die. I didn't know exactly what to say to her, but I said that these are animals raised so that we could eat them, and that they aren't killed in a way that they feel any pain... I am glad she loves animals and respects them so much... I am not sure if what I have said has helped any... I need yet ANOTHER book I think!!! LOL
If anyone has any good things I can tell her, I would gladly listen!?

My DH used to tell me stories about his mom cutting off the chickens heads and them running around...I can't even imagine a little kid having to watch that. It's way to easy for my DH to kill things. Sometimes I get so mad at him but that's the way he was brought up.

God is walking with me every step of the way. Because of HIM this is possible!!

You know I really respect people tough enough and honest enough to look reality squarely in the face and SEE if its truly humane . Most people I find just want to see chicken in the package and not discuss where it comes from or the conditions under which the birds are raised .
