It just upsets me so when I see people posting their Dr's or NUTS want them to get their protein ONLY from food.  I know there are some on this board that do too.. and I know everybody's surgeons and NUTS are different...but.... still....

People who are less than 6 months out saying everything is fine and dandy.  Well - it WILL be until you hit the 2-3 year mark.  That's when your stores will show up on your labs as starting to deplete.  I know people farther out than me that drink only Slim-Fast for their protein and their hair is dull, limp, their eyes are dull - you get the idea.  Protein is what keeps us healthy, keeps our internal organs and nervous system functioning properly.  When I get the response when I tell people I had WLS surgery and they say "but you look so healthy" - I say yea... I do it the right way.  Take my vitamins and supplement my protein.

Sorry - had to vent - just a peeve of mine.  I'm going on 3 years out, have a minimum of 2 protein drinks a day and eat protein first religiously and my protein is on the low side.

We have to be our own best advocates here.  Educate yourself - do your research.  Track your OWN labs.  Don't let ANYTHING get into the low side of the scale, even if your Dr say's you're "fine".

I go to the internist next week and we'll have a nice conversation about all this too.  I'll also let him know I fired my surgeon... just because he DIDN'T contact me about my labs and discuss them with me - regardless if they were good or not.

Ok - off my soapbox.... thanks for letting me vent!!

You're very welcome - and I hope you can use most of it.  If not, pass on to someone who can.

When I post I ALWAYS put disclaimers in my comments, especially if its a topic that can generate some difference of opinions.  They get mean with me, I just go away.  I don't need the stress, unless I'm in a pissy mood - LOL..

Just want to understand since I'm so new at this!
You're saying we need to get protein from supplimental sources in addition to "food."
If we don't, it'll come back and bite us in the butt a few years out?  Yes?

I just want to be clear when I meet w/ my nutritionist!

Then RNY board can get nasty at times....scary!

Carrie - yes, that's pretty much it.  We are able to eat more as time progresses, but our malabsorption of nutrients and vitamins will always happen.  I think people think that because they can eat more, they are getting more protein.  While that may be a little true, you will not be able to absorb enough to maintain your health without continued protein and vitamin supplementation.  And after our honeymoon period we will absorb calories and fats again.

Different surgeons have different eating requirements and some want you to eat only 3 times a day, some say 5, etc.  There's a LOT of information out there and sometimes its hard to sift through what everyone says is the right thing to do, including your surgeon/Dr.

Ask your NUT what them or your Dr's practice recommends.  Hopefully they're on the same page.  Come back here, let us know and we can give our opinions.

Awesome!  Thanks---and I will let you know what the NUT says.

Unfortunately it'll be THREE MORE WEEKS...
meanwhile I'm hammering my liquids.

At least I get the drainage tube out tomorrow.  YAY.
Thanks again Jody.

I know - my nut originally said 60g protein per day, from food only after a year.  3 meals, no snacks.

Well, after 9 months we remet and I showed her my skeletor body.  She said that, for me, 4 small meals per day and 3 shakes would be just fine.

I've since found that my body, and maybe mine alone, works best at maintaining when I keep my calories about 1500-1800 with 140g-170g of protien per day.  Given that amount of protein, I also get in EVERY day 168 oz of water to keep the kidneys going.

Whatever the nuts and surgeons promote (originally had prescribe, then decided that was the wrong word in this case) for amounts and types is based on averages of large amounts of people who generally have all organs in original order.

It's not what we are.  We all need to be our own best advocate, and make sure that we don't just blindly follow recommendations that aren't working for us.

And I was a meanie on the main board last night.  Some idjit (and I use the term advisedly) with the name "2busy2diet" was asking if she should get band or rny, and said she wanted to eat without worrying about carbs.  I was concerned about her posting name, because as WE all know, any of these surgeries requires such a huge dietary change that it will be far more intense than anything you would just do without surgery.  Haven't heard back yet, but I'm expecting a blast.

And again for you Jody -

*edited because I said 18,000 calories per day!  Yikes!!!
