Hang tough! Diets don't work 98% of the time. What surgery are you having? Do you think your surgeon is top notch?

I think what you're feeling is quite normal right before surgery of any type. I too felt like you are and my revision surgery was only 4 1/2 weeks ago and boy now am I so glad I went through with it all. Hang in there and stop beating yourself up so bad. You have not failed yourself in fact you are choosing to deal with your weight problem in the most sensible long term way. Like Gina says that diets fail and even my surgeon says that anyone with more than 10kgs (approx 20lbs) that statistics show that in the long term most people cannot maintain a 20lbs loss by dieting alone.

You have come to the right place for love and support here. Take care of YOU.

Cheers from Karin (in Oz)

If we all exercised and ate "right" we wouldn't need surgery.  The reality is that we don't.  For whatever reasons are ours, we don't.  Stress eating, overeating, binge eating, whatever the reason, we don't.

Most of us have gained and lost many times.  It isn't that we can't lose a few pounds, we just can't keep it off.

Having a great surgeon and following the rules will make a huge difference in the complication possibilities.  However, you have to realize that your HAVE to change also.  Your life will not be the same.  Your new normal will be good, just not like the old.  You may need counciling or Overeaters A or something to help with that.  Surgery is on our tummys, not our heads.  But surgery will give you a tool that wasn't in your toolbox before to help.

Good luck.  It has to be your decision but know that there are many of us here that felt the same way and we are here to help when you need it.

If you look at the data you will find that you will be way for more successful long term with WLS then diet and exercise. You are more likely to loose the weight first of all and then on top of that way more likely to keep it off post five years surgery. I think everyone freaks out a little bit especially when our significant one doesn't totally understand but you have to do what feels like for you...The thing is, after surgery you will still be giving it 100% with the plan and an exercise plan..so its not like you are just taking the easy way out or something, in my opinion you are taking the more successful route but still one that requires a lot of commitment..

I agree with the rest of these wise and wonderful members. You are making a courageous choice to improve your health and well being. You have decided to abandon the traditional and unsuccessful dieting methods that have only set us up for failure. You have turned your back on these ineffective tools and have embarked on a journey that will provide you with the right doctor, the right tool, and the right support group to once and for all provide you with the love and care you deserve to acheive your weight loss goals. Major decisions always are accompanied by major nerves. We are human after all. We will support you in whatever decision you make. Good luck and keep us posted.

There is nothing more that I can say except ditto to what everyone else has said. I know I had those doubts also, the "what ifs" came into play completely, but you know the "what if" is in play now, "What if" I had never done this, I would still be on migraine meds,cholesterolmeds,3 asthma meds, anti anxeity meds, depression meds, possibly insulin(I was on it in the hospital) there are so many "what ifs". This is your choice, if you honestly feel that you want to not have surgery, then talk to your surgeon, your feelings are real and only you can make it better, we can support you as much as possible but you know yourself better than anyone else. Good Luck and please keep us updated ok. BIG HUGS to you!

I was just beginning my journey one year ago, and was so insecure about this choice! The word "elective" is HUGE! It's good that you are considering all the pros and cons, including that pasky "elective" word.

I think as long as you comply to your surgeon's plan, things will go smoothly. To be scared is a GOOD thing/ It means you are aware, and being accountable...

That being said, I just reached my 8th month surgiversary yesterday. I hit my goal at about 6 1/2 months out, and am now down another 3 or 4 pounds depending on the day. I am just over the moon with happiness at this wonderful tool! It was the perfect addition to my personal "tool box". I am nervous about maintenance, but that's what this support group is for. I am so glad I found it. AND at total peace on my decision to go ahead with WLS. I bet you will be too!

We're here when you need us.......
