 Hi everyone!

I've been doing a lot of reading about WLS and found this message board. WLS is still just something I'm learning about, and I wanted to hear what you guys have to say. I'm 23 years old and I've been overweight all of my life. I am currently at a BMI of 32, which is still considered low for surgery. Every time I lose weight it always comes back unless I'm at the gym twice a day and practically starving. I have problems with PCOS and issues with my thyroid, which doctors say is genetic. I'm just tried of all of it. Is there anyone here with a similar situation?

Of course it is a very personal decision to have WLS. If you feel and the Dr feels it is best for you, then by all means have it, but remember it is a lifelong committment and a lifestyle change. I am 35 and have strggled with weight since I had my children, I would lose during my pregnancy then gain it all back after they were born, did the yoyo dieting and gained everything back. Good Luck with your decision. Oh my co morbities were/are diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol,HBP, severe uncontrolled asthma( will always have but is now controlled) migraines, severe depression and a few others. As I said I will suffer some for the rest of my life but the majority have been taken care of.

Hi, and welcome. These ladies on this board are really nice. I would say at 23 you sound like I was. PCOS is no joke. I was always overweight and every year and diet that went by more and more just came on. I'm now at a 37 BMI and it's just going to go up if I don't do something. My doctor told me with my PCOS that WLS is my best bet at being able to lose weight and actually keep it off. I would say at 23 really ask yourself if you are ready for this life change. I'm 30 now and barely qualify for WLS though my insurance so that is another factor If you can't do self pay to think about. I wish I could of done WLS at your age then maybe I wouldn't have been thruough years and years of infertility treatments my insurance wouldn't help me with because my BMI was to high, but I still didn't qualify for WLS then. It's a lot to think about, good luck with whatever decision you make.

Thanks for the advice. Keep me updated about what you decide to do. It's nice to see other people going thru similar issues. Good luck to you, too!

I am having VSG in July. I'm so excited to begin my new life as a healthy woman. I am also excited my ObGyn said most his patients who do WLS with PCOS have great outcomes with all the symptoms almost or completely gone.

Hello. I've been obese for only 6 years and I'm sick of it. Mine came from hypothyroidism and meds with steroids. I am considered a lightweight as well....why I am here, with 70-80 pounds to lose. to others, that is small potatoes but to me it's alot. I've basically been 140 pounds since age 21-22 and stayed there til 2007. I am 38 and I am not happy. I have high blood pressure, mild joint pain.

I chose rny because of the success rate.  I thought about the sleeve first but changed my mind. You'll do great and this site is very informative.
