Checking blood sugars
I bought a glucose monitor to check my blood sugars to check for reactive hypoglycemia but im not really sure what im doing...All I know is that in the past three days I have had three serious dumping episodes..one time was my fault I just simply ate too much sugar the other time was just dumping for unknown reasons after eating...but when I check my blood sugars while im experiencing the symptoms they seem pretty normal around 140, last night I was really sick and my blood sugar got up to 180 though..my understanding is if its the reactive hypoglycemia the blood sugar would be like 70 or less but im not really sure when to check for this?? My ability to "dump" on carbs and or sugar seems more sensitive than ever, is this suppose to get worse as time goes on?? I thought this would gradually get better...
I recently found out that I dump on too many carbs. I had a protein drink I made with Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, protein powder and sugar free pudding mix. It had 23 grams of carbs and I dumped. For some stupid reason I thought I wouldn't dump if it was high protein so now I am more careful.
I never checked my blood sugar during this episode because I was too out of it but in the past when I have checked my blood sugar it has run higher rather then lower.

I have a question for you guys...how much sugar is usually too much? I don't want to dump and am afraid to eat anything with sugar in it.....but even the flavored greek yogurts have 14g sugar. Is this too much? Will 12-14g of sugar cause me to dump???
My mom had some of those Vitatops....12g sugar (only 5g protein) and 8g fiber. I was scared to try one. At what sugar level do you guys usually see dumping?
Well usually for me its greater than 16 grams..I know that because sometimes I eat yogurt with that amount and I am okay..I think it might depend though on the type of sugar because the other day I had a small bite of no bake cookie and dumped..and I really doubt it was more than 16 grams of sugar..also high fat does make me dump (greater than 15 grams at a time) and eating more than one or two bites of carbs such as potatoes makes me dump...also, milk makes me dump..thinking its the sugar/fat combination? I pretty much can dump on anything and everything now that I think about it! I have very few "safe" foods that I eat on a regular basis that I know will not make me dump..and also I didn't really dump at all for the first 3 months..not sure if it was because I was just eating so little or what..
thanks Sue I will do that! I am trying to make a chart so when I go to the doctor I have some "evidence"..I have been feeling really fatigued lately (for the past 2-3 months) and I am trying to figure out why..don't think its vitamin related because I take my vitamins everyday religiously and I don't know how "normal" it is to dump so many times and so easily...
Reactive hypoglycemia and dumping aren't the same thing, I don't think. From what I've read, dumping is when you get too much glucose (sugar) too fast, causing the symptoms you feel when you dump. This would make sense to me why your blood glucose was so high when you were dumping. If it were RH, your BG would be much lower, I would think. I'm not an expert or a nurse (nor do I have RNY), though, so hopefully someone with more medical background will chime in.
