Update on my Dr's appt
I hate to tell you but an Internist and PCP are the same thing. Many years ago before HMO's came into play, when you went to your regular doctor - they were all internists, a few were called family practioners because they treated adults, teens and children and very few were DO's which were very rare in those days and Nurse practioners didn't exist back then either. Then when HMO's came into play, patients needed to pick there "primary care physician" and that is how all the current doctors all call themselves PCP's but most of them are indeed Internists. They do not specialize in blood disorders as a rule unless that particular doctor that you were refered to is has a sub specialty as a hematologist. Hematologist are specialists that specialize in blood disorders which if you are having trouble with your iron, is who you need to see. I haven't read your past posts so I dont know the details but I had severe iron deficiency long before my RNY due to a problem with malabsorbtion due to a pancreas issue as well as B12 deficiency for about 15 - 20 years. I got IV iron for about a year until my pancreas recovered and have been on B12 shots all this time. You should check into if this Interist has a subspecialty of hematology or I would really recommend seeing an actual hematology since they are the ones that are trained in iron disorders as well as B12, folate and other anemias or blood problems.
I know my PCP is an Internist/Pulmonologist.
