Finally getting in protein, scale is going up instead of down!

Hi all!  So, if you remember, I was having a horrible time with nausea and I wasn't able to get in anywhere close to what my doc wanted for protein.  I was focused on fluids only for a few days and I'm happy to say that the nausea is gone and I have found ways to get the protein in!  Granted, I have only consumed about 60g of proteins the last couple days, instead of the 83g that my doc and nut suggest, but that is leaps and bounds above the 10g I was getting on a good day up till this point.

So why is the scale going up now instead of down?  Is it just an initial rise because of the increased food consumption, instead of just fluids, and it should start going back down once the protein gets to work?  Or am I doing something wrong?

My protein sources have been yogurt, protidiet protein drink (which, btw, the grape flavor is amazing), gatorade protein recovery, beef and cheese.

It will start coming back down....and probably in a hurry. Also keep track of your TOM...I've found that I usually go up a pound or two and then lose 3-4 the next week.....which keeps me on the boring 2 pounds a week track that my body seems to like.  I have an IUD so I don't have actual periods, but my weight retention/gain/loss cycle runs still the same.

Where did you find protidiet in Missoula, or did your order it online?

Oh man, TOM, I wish I could keep track of it.  Unfortunately, TOM has been with me since I started my 10 day preop and hasn't really left.  I go a couple days free and clear, then it's back.  Glad I don't have a man in my life right now, lol.

I ordered protidiet from www.bariatricchoice.com, they shipped it the next day and it took about 4 business days to get to me.  The stuff is pretty expensive ($10.99 for 7 servings) but the grape flavor is just like drinking regulare grape juice or sucking on a grape popsicle.  For me, the high price is worth the 15g of protein minus the nausea!

Any suggestions are welcomed! A few weeks back I was traveling to WY for work and I stopped at Walmart and got some of the Protein Shots...Supposed to be like 22g each. They tasted so bad that I couldn't do it....not even holding my nose!

Oh man, I hear ya!  I could stomach those before surgery, but not now!!  I also tried a liquid protein they had called pro-stat that gives you 15g in 2 tbsp, but the taste and texture were awful.  It was a thick syrup consistency and talk about some serious pucker factor!! lol  One of the reviews said to mix it with apple juice and it goes down ok, but I have yet to find an apple juice with low sugar content.  Maybe a light orange juice?  I'll let you know how that ends up!

I think Amy's right. Your body is freakin that it's finally getting nutrients. It could just be bloating. I'm soo glad to hear that you are able to get stuff down, though! Though the weight is important, your health is much more so.

Hugs friend!

I had the same issue with protein right after surgery and it gradually got better.  My doctor told me just to make sure I was getting my fluids in and work up to the protein goal.

I loved having egg beaters, low sugar yogurts, cottage cheese, ff refried beans w/ salsa and cheese, soups.

After a while I tried protein shakes again.  If you like that grape, there are all the Nectar ones that are just like drinking crystal light.  In fact my 4 yr old thinks the "twisted cherry" one tastes better than kool aid!  I think it's like 23grms of protein.

Don't worry about the scale right now, just follow your docs rules and take it easy on yourself!

Thanks, Mara!  I'll have to check the Nectar ones out!

At this point, I agree, you just need to worry about getting in your fluids first, then protein.  Anything else is gravy (well not really but you get the point).

Put the scale away for a while.  Some folks can weigh daily or seferal times a day and it doesn't get to them.  Others are driven crazy by the up and down.  In reality, you just need to work your plan and you will lose.  You really will.

The other thing I did that reassured me was posting on miles and menus.  It was pretty boring at first when I was eating creamed soup and yogurt but I could tell by the totals, I wasn't eating enough to gain no matter what the scale said.

You will do fine.  I'm sure.

Price is right, if getting on the scales upsets you and makes you question then it's best to stay off of them.

If you can handle drinks with flavors then you will probably like the nectars.  Order samples from Vitalady before you buy whole jugs.  My favorite is Lemon Tea.  I can drink it plain but most of the time  I add MiO flavorings or crystal lite to it. I get bored with the same flavor all of the time so this way I get variety and I don't have to buy a lot of jugs.  It has 23 grams of Protein per scoop, no sugar, no carbs, and only 90 calories.

With the RNY we don't absorb all of the Protein in food so I only count the Protein I get from Whey.
