Don't know if I'm a lightweight... but I'm surely scared!
Hi.... I'm Lori... and I'm not new to OH, but new to this forum. I had lost over 100 lbs doing low carb and it's been creeping back on for the past year. My lowest weight was 199 and now I'm back up to 240 and have begun the process of WLS.
I'm guessing everyone here has been through this... which, at this point I'm considering the biggest pain in the butt there ever was! So far, all I've done is had my first appointment, got a resource nurse from the insurance company assigned to me, had the sleep study and today went to the nutrition class (which was supposed to be an hour and a half... but ended up being 3 hours sitting in a very uncomfortable chair lol.
The people from the sleep lab called me today and told me there were issues and I needed to be referred to another doctor. On Friday, I'm supposed to go for the endoscopy. I still have 2 visits to go with an independent physician for a 6 month medically supervised diet (visit 5 is on the 23rd of this month)

gee.. guess the rest of it got cut off! I still have psychologist on July 11... need 3 - 5 years worth of medical records from my primary along with a letter explaining why wls will benefit me (which I still don't know if he'll do).... and THEN find out if the insurance company will approve the procedure.
Option 2. Lay on the couch... get back up to 330 lbs and wait to die, but go down fighting all the way. It was hard enough the FIRST time hitting the gym twice a day and living on protein.. guess we'll see...

Welcome, Lori...keep fighting to get surgery.
I also lost quite a bit of weight low carb at one point and it all came back with friends the minute I eased up. Then going lower carb (not true low carb) in the last 3 years helped me get down to manageable weight (205-210) but I had LOTS of comorbids that were killing me slowly. Deciding on WLS was the best thing I did for myself.
And your PCP may surprise you, ours did and was all for us going forward with the surgery. The appt asking for his approval was the hardest one I did but in the year since, I've had my surgery, and he's pleased a*****h at our results. (my husband also had WLS 5 weeks before I did).
The endoscopy, while a pain, is necessary to rule out ulcers and anything else they may find. Other than a minor scratchy throat you won't remember it.

HI Liz..
My comorbidities are Type II diabetes (controlled with diet).. I ditched the insulin when I stopped eating carbs in 2008... but lately I'm pigging out on garbage! Also, the sleep lab found something wrong .. I stop breathing for more than 10 seconds all night long when I'm in a deep sleep... so i don't know if that counts. I also have copd/emphysema (but working hard on quitting smoking if the surgery is a possibility. Hey... my pcp might approve it on that ALONE! He's been busting my chops to stop smoking for 20 years! lol

Welcome ! You Will probably have to stop smoking ( or definitely SHOULD on your own before surgery ) simply because patients who smoke have a very high rate of ulcers after a few years .....
that said the surgery is truly lifesaving and U sound like a great candidate . I know Ive been where U are ( except for the smoking part ) - and my diabetes resolved... even my weight is finally for the first time in my life stable ... what a miracle !
SOOO worth the fight and time to get the surgery !!

AhHA.. my addiction! More than food (which I have nooooo problem getting so angry with that I can ignore it)... CIGARETTES! I've smoked through horrible bouts of bronchitis..... during one very bad bout of it, both my husband and I had it at the same time - he never picked up a cigarette again - and he couldn't believe I was still trying to take a drag here and there as I was coughing up a lung.
Oh yea.... I'm hardcore... I know I'd crawl on my bare belly through a snowstorm for 20 miles to get a pack if I'm out - so this is my biggest challenge. I can.. I will... cooperate, follow all the rules, jump through all the hoops, take all the vitamins, exercise until it hurts EVERYONE in the room (not just me) - but I fear I won't be able to quit. The surgeon says he's broken up with more than one patient for not quitting - and just to keep me honest - he'll start tox screening me for nicotine when it gets closer and won't schedule me until I'm a month clean.
This is my .. mmmm.. 7th day of chantix. I've tried it before and it made me sick as a dog so I gave up in the second week. This time, I've warned the people in my house that I will get sick, and they will be fending for themselves. I will wake up screaming from night terrors, I will feel like I have the flu all day long and I'll become just about useless for however long it takes. I coudln't afford to say that the first time I tried it, so I quit and in a few days went back to life as usual - but still smoking about 3 packs a day - but everyone else in the house was HAPPY that meals were cooked and laundry was done and the house was spotless and the shopping was done, errands were run, animals were cared for and the ship was run tightly. NOT THIS TIME! LOL I don't know how long those effects last -- but this time I am bound and determined. I also switched brands to something I find a tad repulsive. It makes me take a couple of drags and put it out. YES I do have an E cigarette, but the doctor said "not good enough"! Since the e-cigarette still delivers nicotine, it'll be a deal breaker.
My most drastic idea in this venture to quit is to have my husband take my car keys when he leaves the house. He needs to make sure my wallet is void of c/c's, debit cards, cash. We have the usual change jugs that have literally hundreds in them - they need to go (I can cheat with a lot of cigs with that insignificant change). I live about 10 miles from town - so the thought of walking the 20 miles there and back isn't a cool thought (and my bike needs to be disabled). If there's no REHAB for hardcore smokers, I'll create my own! LOLOL
sorry about the diatribe.... but this is the scariest part of it all..... jumping through all those hoops and NOT being able to quit!!
Thanks for reading the rant!! (as you can see. this does make me nervous)
God be with you all!!!
