When to exercise?

So, my NUT never brought up when I can start working out. I do laps around the house and my cul-de-sac, but that's about it.

I still have a lot of left side pain so I don't know how much more I could do, but I wouldn't mind trying something more. Maybe playing tennis or something on the Wii or doing some light weights or using my resistance band.

When did you all start working out?

((Oh and I posted a couple before pics as well as 2 weeks out... amazing, but there is a bit of a difference already!))

We were told to only walk and do light weights for the first year. Not something you see anywhere on OH as guidance. That's something my surgeon encourages. Regardless, you are still healing on the inside, so I would wait until you're more like 6 - 8 weeks out before moving on to any kind of light cardio and light weights. Walking is fine for now.

We left the hospital with resistance bands from Physical Theropy and were told to use those and walk.  I was released for everything but abdominal stuff at Curves at 10 days, the rest at 3 months.  Only do what you are comfortable with and part of that will be what is/was in your routine before surgery.

Checking in with your surgeon is always a good place to start.
I was allowed to increase my activity after 4 weeks, but really couldnt comfortably until about 2 months. Thats when I started yoga and pilates, beside walking that I had been doing since surgery.
Good luck!

ps, looking good, really can see a big difference already! congrats!!

I had to wait till I was 3 mo out and he wanted me to do nothing more than walk, if it hurts do NOT push any further, your insides need to heal. Now if you feel you can walk a litle further, then walk, but I would avoid anything heavier for a little while longer.

My surgeon's office said six weeks and we could add weight training at 3 months.  Seems like this is another one of those areas in which every doctor's practice gives a different answer.  I just took it slow.  I remember when I could only do 30 seconds on the elliptical!

I would ask your dr but I was in the gym at 3 weeks post surgery doing light cardio.  For me, this was my goal and he asked at my 4 week post op appt if I was walking (he stressed that I must be doing that). I was like, does the ellipical count?  lol.  For me I know that physical activity has to be a part of maintenance or I will struggle.  Good luck and hope you get an answer soon.

p.s. start slow.....stamina takes while to build back up and drink lots of water!  my side stayed sore for awhile and I still have days (like today) where it is sore again.

I was told to wait 3 months before cardio..walking was okay right away..if you are having pain I would suggest to back off you really need to let your body heal that is the most important at this time..
