I failed my sleep study worse than I thought I would....

and my test was supposed to be a split study where they wake you and put you on the mask to decide pressure.  They did not wake me and my Dr, who is head of the sleep lab, ordered me to do the horrible sleep test AGAIN to figure out pressure.  It took me MONTHS to go get another sleep test because they are horrible to me and he pulls this.  UGg!  The good news is that I have a Comorbid that can't be denied by my Dr.  I still have to pay out of pocket though.  I can't wait till my BMI goes up for five years to get insurance to cover it

Sleep Study- I slept 377min. and aroused 154 times.  I had "significant obstructive sleep apnea and hypopnia during REM and non REM  and in supine and non supine postitions."  Longest Apnea was 27 seconds.  Apnea plus hypopnea index elevated at 17."

The bad thing is that I have tried for weeks at a time to use the cpap and can't do it!  I am worried about doing it in the hospital after surgery.  It makes me swallow air and I can't sleep.  I have at least four masks that I have tried.

I think I'm supposed to say congratulations. lol  Anyway, if that's what you need to get the surgeon to approve you, then YEAH!!!  All I had to do was take the CPAP with me to the hospital, they didn't even know to hook me up until I asked for it. So, don't worry too much.

At least you have a definitive co-morbid...one that is best resolved by losing weight. ESP since you had surgery for it before.

Now, you really must keep trying to get the cpap to work...they won't do surgery without it. And they will have you on it afterward as well. But the good side is I suspect you will be able to ditch it once you get your weight down. And yes, they do have to figure out the right pressure for you, unfortunately.

Too bad you have to wait the five years for the BMI issue but at least you have an undeniable comorbid.

My surgeon took us off the cpac immediately after surgery.  I was on oxygen but no cpac because they didn't want the pressure blowing air into us.  I haven't used mine since surgery Hurray, hurray.  I went through several types of mask before I found one.  Mine didn't cover my mouth and that made it tolerable.  I used mine nightly for years but no more.  One of my definate goals was to get off that thing.

Congrats on the co-morbidity (I think!)

Although there is something wrong that we all want to have more serious diseases diagnosed so that we can improve our health.... but I guess you have all heard that before!

I had my sleep study a couple of weeks ago, and see a pulmonologist for the results in early July.

I didn't use my CPAP in the hospital.  The beginning pressure may be too high on your machine.  Mine is set to take 20 minutes to reach full pressure.  Also-google SleepWeaver to find a different type of mask.  I thought I would never be able to handle the mask but this one is soft cloth and really made a difference for me
Good luck

Liz, you said they will not do the surgery without the cpap.  What do you mean?  Will my surgeon try to find out if I have been wearing it before surgery?  I did not have any heart issues and my oxygen wasn't bad, I am just tired.  I can take my machine to the hospital, but really I have not been wearing it all of these years because I tried and tried and tried and I pull it off in my sleep, wake up tons etc.

Mel, just taking it to the hospital is really all that is required and they may put you on a bi-pap during surgery but you won't remember that part anyway so don't freak out. As for afterward, it's only if your oxygen drops low that they worry about you wearing it. My husband had to have his but his oxygen kept going low without it.
