Hi guys,

I'm just wondering if any of you have some kind of Medical alert card or SOS Jewellery after having your WLS?

My doctor told me that after WLS that we must be careful if ever we are in an accident and need any Nasal Gastric Tubing. So I'm wondering if any one of you have these?

Cheers from Karin (in Oz)

My Doc never told me to get one but many in my other boards have them. I am just revising my medical card that I have in my visor. It already says Von Willebrands disease, so i am writing in Roux En Y for safety. I am NOT stressing it though.

I've had a medic alert necklace for decades now due to allergies/diabetes...all I did was update my file to include my surgery information. I like the fact that there is someone able to provide my medical history, etc to someone taking care of me 24/7. Many medical alert jewelry doesn't come with that backing but the medic alert products do.

Here is my necklace.

Yes, I do firmly believe in having one. For RNY people, you need to add that you have a Blind Stomach and are allergic to NSAIDS (just putting that you can't take them isn't enough, if you say you are allergic, they will avoid them)

This has been discussed over the years, but not for quite awhile on this board.

I considered it early out and just forgot about it.  There are a lot of different kinds and some that look like real jewelry, but the staff would have to know what to look for...

If you do - let us know what you get and post a pic for us to see.

I have a beautiful bracelet from Lauren's Hope: http://www.laurenshope.com/category/87/medical-alert-jewelry-medical-id-bracelets-for-women. I get compliments on it all the time. The tag lists my name, date and type of procedure, no NSAIDs, no blind NG Tube, and allergies.

Having one from there is good but Lauren's Hope does not have the people behind it like Medic Alert does.

To be honest, I can't fit all my issues on my necklace or a bracelet so I list the most important ones. The rest is accessed by EMT personnel, doctors, nurses, any hospital or medical person trying to care for me in a crisis. All they have to do is dial the number on the back of my tag, give them that tag number and with proper identification, my entire medical history, prescriptions/OTC meds I take, my doctor, my surgeon, my pharmacist, and two possible people to contact for me in case of emergency.

And that service is avaiable 24/7/365/366 days a year. I can travel in most countries around the world and they can access that same information.

And Medic Alert has a line of very pretty bracelets. Besides the bracelets and necklaces, they also carry sports bracelets, watch, shoe tag, and even a dog tag. They have several different programs now but my husband and I use the basic/standard membership.

Thank you for all your replies.  I like the Medic Alert ones but I'm a Gold gal and the gold ones are soooo expensive.  I am allergic to Morphine and have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I'm on several medications so I suppose it's a small price to pay for my medical safety.  I have a long medical history so I need one that will have the phone back up service so the Medic Alert is looking like the one.

In addition to Medic Alert, Road ID has a product that lets you put all your info on a website.

http://www.roadid.com

I use their products when I bike, run and swim. I don't use one regularly for a number of reasons.

Someone posted something that walgreens sells on line not long ago.  It was a braclet that had a computer chip in it.  Like a jump drive.  You could put your info in your computer and then down load it to your braclet.  The Dr, EMS, etc can download your info into any laptop. It was cheap and looked pretty easy.
