x-post from DS board- my sleep study last night

I just got back from my sleep study, which I needed to fail to be accepted  as  DS patient with Dr. Smith in Ga.  It was a split night study so I expected them to wake me up for the cpap part of the test, but they did not.  The tech said that I had scattered "breathing episodes"  and I snored and woke myself up.  He said the pulmonologist would read the study and see what he says.  He said something before the study about seeing if my oxygen dropped low enough for the mask, at least I think that is what he was saying.  I had sleep apnea about 3-4 years ago and they woke me to put the mask on.  That was a different Dr. and a different sleep lab though.  That Dr. did the UPP and tonsil removal surgery on me, but I feel like I still have an issue and my dh has noticed it.  If I can't get the Ds, I don't know how I will lose weight.  I am a "lightweight" so sleep apnea was supposed to be my comordid.  I am about an hour away from Dr. Smith.  I wonder who the next closet, best Ds sugeon is for a lap Ds?  We had not planned to have to travel and have to have someone watch our kids.  I was keeping this a secret as much a possible.  I hope I didn't just wait all of this time and not get accepted.

I had enough sleep apnea the first sleep study to be put on a cpap...I chose the surgery route myself. I STILL considered that I had sleep apnea at my surgery weight because I had been told that if I gained much more, I would end up on a mask. And having HAD sleep apnea meant I still used it as a comorbid.

My studies were not split studies.

Have you had lab work done yet, esp glucose testing?

Another comorbid that works is having enough weight on to cause mobility issues. If your weight is causing you pain in your joints, that may be your key too.

Arthritis in my big toe was my comorbidity that qualified me for surgery.  Also bladder incontinence.  I didn't know it at the time that it was a condition that may qualifiy me, but I had it.  Interestingly enough though, when I started losing weight it went away (yea) but it came back about 2 years later.

I had high blood pressure, but not high enough. I had high blood sugars, but not high enough. I had arthritis in my hip, but didn't really qualify. I also needed to fail the sleep study as my one main comorbidity.

LIke you I was supposed to have a split study.....but I woke up in the morning and they had not put the cpap on me. The tech at the sleep center wouldn't say anything other than I snored so I was so disappointed, thinking that I must have passed. I had to wait two weeks for my followup....and wouldn't you know it...I FAILED! However, my apnea was considered "positional", as long as I slept on my side I was fine, ZERO issues. But as soon as I flopped on my back I had lots of oxygen issues.  Sleep doc still wrote it up as a fail since he couldn't MAKE me sleep on my back and the insurance paid for my RNY with no questions.

Short answer to a long story...just because they didn't put the cpap on you doesn't mean you don't have sleep apnea.

Hang in there and let us know your results.

I had a sleep study a couple of weeks ago, and they didn't put the cpap on.  I must say that I was completely exhausted after that sleep study.  I haven't heard the results - they were sent to the pulmonologist, who I will see in early July.  Like many others, I'm just missing out on most of the  co-morbidities.

Good luck in all your tests!

I was told my joint pain was not severe enough to count at a COE.  They are really picky.  I bet I have the positional apnea because the tech told me to lay on my back at one point and one time I woke up and he said I could lay on my side.  I was so tired today, after my sleep study that I slept ALL day till 5pm!!

I have severe bladder urgency and pain and just got diagnosed with IC- Interstitial Cystitis.  I do not have incontinence though.  I did ask the nurse if this was considered overactive bladder and she said it has an OB component.  She did say weight loss would put more less pressure on the bladder, but I would still have it so I am not sure if it would count as a comorbid for a COE place. I am on medication for my bladder and getting treatments to numb the pain.

They did not even accept my high cholesterol...not high enough.  Good grief. All of this wasted time. Boohoo!

Mel, I know he isn't on DSFacts but this surgeon in Augusta also lists the DS: http://www.obesityhelp.com/profiles/bariatric-surgeon/dr-arthur-b-chasen/

Switching surgeons is fairly easy, I did it twice.

I had tons of comorbidities so I didn't need anything else but I hope they can add all of your almost theres to a good conclusion.  However, if they had done that for me, I could have had a sleeve or DS and those weren't surgeries my insurance would pay for.
I think that their thinking is related to $$$$ not patient care most of the time.
