Did anyone else experience nausea in the weeks post op?

Hey everyone.  I am struggling with fluids and protein.  I am two weeks post op and have had good days and bad days but the last 4 days have all been bad.  I can't keep any protein drinks down.  I can do a couple sips of water or a popsicle as long as I don't move for a while.  I know I'm dehydrated, which is making things worse but is there anything that can be done about the nausea?  I called my Dr's office and the nurse said they only prescribe anti-nausea meds if I am constantly vomitting, she said I have to deal with the nausea.

My insurance wouldn't cover the surgery, so I doubt they would cover an e/r visit to get fluids because of the surgery.  Any suggestions?

Rebecca,
So sorry to hear that you are still having some issues.  I also went through a phase of nausea and having trouble with the protein shakes. My surgeon said that the first three weeks I just needed to focus on fluids (even before protein) so I would just focus on water...even if you have to use Crystal Light, etc. to help get it down.

Thanks Amy.  I think I'll take your Dr's advice!  Mine is hammering the protein and I simply cannot do it right now, which sucks, because I can feel my calf muscles getting weaker and cramping, etc.  This too shall pass, right? ugh   About how long did your nausea last?

On and off for the first 4 weeks. He told me that for the first three weeks he didn't care how much protein I got in (but to shoot for 40g/day) but as long as what I was only taking in things that "made a puddle" that was ok. He said that his whole point is to keep from being dehydrated those first three weeks then focus on the protein and vitamins starting week 3.

He also said that the first weeks you are literally peeing away all those broken down fat cells....so the more you can drink the more you will get all of that waste out of you!  I've done well on his advice so far...he is a Center of Excellence doc for whatever that is worth.

Keep tha****er going and you will get through this and be feeling better by next week!

I've only had one moment of nausea, which is nice. I'm sorry you are.. it sounds pretty miserable. If you start getting light headed or dizzy, I would call your doc. You may have to get in and get some fluids. I know my surgeon actually will do IV fluids in office. Maybe thats an option?

Take it easy and feel better.

sorry you are so nauseated that is no fun! I didn't really have much of a problem with this although my doctor did prescribe us nausea pills as soon as we left the hospital..my hubby who had the sleeve (part I of the ds) suffered from nausea for like 3 months after..he had to really figure out what would trigger it and stay away from it...are you drinking a certain type of protein drink or does it happen no matter the type of protein? He said that as long as he sat very still right after eating he would be okay...hope you figure it out and too bad your doctor is being like that..that seems kind of silly!

When my DD suffered with morning sickness she got Sea Sickness wrist bands.  She said they worked great for that and I bet they would work for this too.  We bought them at the drug store.

Don't worry about getting your protein in,  just try to get as many fluids in as you can. I had trouble with cold fluids so I sipped on chicken/beef broth, hot tea, SF hot chocolate etc.   Have you tried sucking on crushed ice. My DD bought a snow cone machine because she loves ice and she was driving her DH crazy crunching on ice.    I couldn't do popsicles because the flavors made me sick.

I can't imagine the insurance company refusing to pay because they didn't cover the surgery.  Dehydration is a health issue that could cause you harm.

Hi Rebecca,

I too am only a couple of weeks out from RNY surgery but mine was a revision so maybe that's why I don't have the nausea you are suffering.  My doc too said just fluids galore as long as they aren't sugary fluids but to just drink, drink & drink some more. I found ice a Godsend and I just crunched away on ice for days as it was one way of getting in more fluid.  I can now drink the protein shakes but I am struggling to have the compulsory 2 per day my doc wants me to have but I'm working on it.

Try the ice and just sip whatever you can get in.

I've just realised we are RNY sisters for same date surgery. :)

Cheers from Karin (in Oz)
