How slow to go for introducing foods?

Hey everyone, so my excitement to eat normal food again was shot down just as quickly as it came after eating 2 bites of greek yogurt yesterday (that I have been eating with no problems since Sunday).  What a horribly gut wrenching experience that was.  Needless to say, I haven't wanted to look at anything other than water since it happened.  So my question for you experts, how slow should I be going at introducing foods to my tummy again?

On Tuesday afternoon I had a stick of string cheese, Tuesday evening a hard boiled egg (just the whites), Wednesday morning I had one of each, then Wednesday afternoon I had the yogurt and the fun really began!

I thought I was going slow, but apparently not.  Any suggestions?

I tried something new pretty often in the beginning but never more than one thing at a time.  In the beginning, you only eat one thing at a time anyway, but I wanted to know what the problem was if there was one.  Actually, I never had any problems as long as I took small bites and chewed well.  I had a cast iron stomach before surgery and have a cast iron one still, it seems.  I did stick to my plan totally in the beginning, going from liquid to pureed to soft, etc.

I ate a lot, well, so to speak, of yogurt in the beginning.  Maybe the natural sugars in the yogurt was the problem or if it was flavored, it could have been that.

I think you may be right about the sugars because I just noticed that I had been drinking a different crystal light flavor, one I hadn't had post-op, and it has 3g of sugar per serving.  I had been sipping on that all day, and felt crummy all day.  So I'm wondering if the yogurt was the straw that broke the camel's back?  Yogurt has been fine on it's own (I eat plain Fage mixed with sugar free crystal light), but topped with the sugar from the other crystal light I had been drinking maybe could have done it?

I'm nearly three months out and still have issues from time to time. At first I LOVED scrambled eggs and that was my go to. Then one day BAM I was in pain for hours, felt crummy and finally had to take a nap to make it go away. Honestly, I can't even look at a scrambled egg now!!

Like Price I've always had kind of an iron gut, but I do trying to do only one new thing at a time...just to make sure.

My new favorite is cottage cheese with some little apple chunks (about 1/8 to 1/4 of an apple) with either crystal light or sugar free preserves mixed in. There is no way that I can eat more than 1/2 cup though.

I've been working on having two protein shakes a day (maybe two coffee ones in the morning and then one regular in the afternoon). I've also been adding Unjury to them to get the protein up to 40g. That puts me at least 80g protein a day before food....so I don't have to worry so much about forgetting to eat.  Still focusing on no bad carbs (crackers, etc.)

What kind of crystal light do you mix the plain yogurt with? That seems like a pretty good idea..It was probably the sugar in the yogurt..some of that yogurt has a lot of sugar or it could have been the dairy from the yogurt..After surgery I am lactose intolerant..well at least a little, I can tolerate yogurt and cheese as long as it isn't a lot but anything with milk is not my friend...in fact I can't even stand the taste of it anymore in soup or anything..and I used to drink 2 glasses of milk a day.

I use lemonade crystal light, not too much pucker factor as the raspberry lemonade causes! That stinks about the milk. I too was a milk lover pre-surgery. I still have another week before I can try it but so far I have been able to tolerate cheeses. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Rebecca, I had more errors than trials at first. I learned to stick to one food per meal. I had stay away from high sugar and fats (still do for the most part). I did better with moist foods. Tuna salad and string cheese were my "go to" foods. I also learned to take my time between bites. I still have trouble with that one sometimes!

It took me four months before I was able to eat more than one food group at a meal. I would make sure to eat my protein at meals and then have other foods as snacks.

Some of us have to take it slower than others. It can be hard to be patient but remember that you have a lifetime of eating ahead of you. At six months, I can tell you that my new tummy is much more resilient than at first. I actually ate a little grilled steak last week. Hang in there!
