I think you'll find most of us fought with the insurance companies and won.  There are a few here that went out of country or self-payed here in the US.

I  know alot of people go out to Mexico or plastic surgery, and travel alone, but it all depends on the facility.

You will probabkly have someone chime in that has more to say about it.

I am in the same boat as far as not having the BMI for the past five years so I will be self-pay.  I thought about Mexico and my Dad was really concerned about that and after doing research on safety, I decided to stay in the States.  I did not want to travel and leave my kids here...I just feel safer here.  I wi**** were cheaper though!

There are quite a few that I've seen go to Mex to have surgery and return extremely happy with their decision. Do your research, talk to other patients, find out the good and bad about the surgeons, and don't trust the ads you see here on OH...just paid advertising, buyer beware.  There are a couple of surgeons I'd trust in Mex or Brazil. Dr Ungson and Dr Marchesini. Good luck and please keep us posted. --gina

A fellow up here self paid for a DS with Dr. Ungston and travelled alone.  He was very happy with his experience.

I went to Dr. Aceves in Mexicali and traveled alone and got VSG.  It was safe, easy, supportive, no issues.  I was not fat enough for insurance to pay for me, and my bmi was too low to be taken seriously by any bariatric doc here.  Anyway I wanted VSG and couldn't find a doctor in Indiana who had done more than 50 surgeries.   The surgeon I chose has done more than 1,000.  I was worried about not having support when I got home but my pcm has taken me in (I asked him before I went to MX) and Dr. Aceves, is a phone call, text away.  How many doctors give you their cell phone number and say to call anytime?  He's reputation is great, and I had heard great things about him but experiencing it is believeing it.

No regrets.  Do your research.

Well again its UR choice but I had No hesitation about altering the weight on a few of my medical records going back as I hand delivered them ( obviously I COPIED them over in staples lol to disguise that fact ) to lady in the docs office who was dealing with the insurance approval ... ... and gaining twenty lbs or so ( and drinking a GALLON of water before and slouching way down at the weigh in lol)

I DID have co-morbidities . Some co morbidities that insurance DOES cover that makes them have to cover U at 35 BMI are things like SNORING ( sleep apnea) high blood pressure , ( just eat a bunch Mickey Ds the day before your appointment .. GUARANTEED Ull pas that one with FLYING COLORS LOL ) ashtma , a ton of other things . PCOS , occasional incontinence due to pressure on Ur bladder due to weight ( obviously U can TELL ur doc U have these things .. ) , not being able to breathe right due to Ur weight so not being able to exercise . You only need to prove two to qualify at 35 BMI .

IF I was a say 27 bmi .. itd be a diferent story but at a 33 or so .. if i had insurance .. Id at least TRY for full coverage here myself . Really ... what do U have to LOSE ? the worst they can say is NO ...

I think the first thing U might have to get over is Ur OWN feeling that an under 250 lb person is ENTITLED to this lifesaving surgery and the insurance coverage to obtain it .. same as a larger more obviously " fat" person. I paid INTO this system the same as they did ... I needed this surgery at least as much ... there was NO HESITATION on my part in doing whatever I had to do ...

yes I would have eventually ended up in another country had i exhausted all other possibilities and been forced to go self pay . I was EXTREMELY pleasantly surprised how easy-as-pie the approval process turned out to be when i singlemindedly pursued it ...

Well, not only was I a low bmi I also didn't have any co morbidities by any stretch of the imagination and wasn't up to any Boris and Natasha hyjinx to jump through all the hoops I had seen my friend go through for her crap-band locally when the self pay rates are so reasonable (in Mex) and you can get it done so much faster (I know everywhere and every insurance is different) but to answer your FIRST and only question, YES I just got back from Juarez Mexico all by myself last week from Dr. Rodriguez and you will be FINE!

They are WONDERFUL!!!! (honestly as good or better care than I've ever gotten in a US hospital and I really think being there for 3 nights made a big difference....many US hospials will ship you home in 24-48 hrs from what I hear  Feel free to pm me with any questions!
