WTF???
I just posted this on another thread but I thought I would post it here, too, to see what others have experienced.
I hit my final goal last week and WTF I am going up and down. For 10 months I could count on my weight being pretty stable between loses. I would hit a weight and stay there for several days. I rarely lost weight 2 days in a row. It would stay the same for at least 2 or 3 days and then drop a bit. I could count on one hand the number of times I had a gain.
Now all of the sudden it is different every day. I haven't weighed the same 2 days in a row all week. I am nearly 2 lbs higher then my lowest. I have to admit I am kind of freaking out since this is not what I am used to. I haven't changed what I am eating at all. I am still eating the way I was when I was losing. I haven't added anything in at least a month.
I am afraid it will continue to go up although logically I don't see why it would. I don't feel like the malabsorption thing applies to me since my revision was to decrease my malabsorption so I don't know why it would decrease even more but I really don't know.
I know it would take at least 7,000 extra calories to gain 2 lbs and I know I haven't eaten that many. Even if my calories went up 200 a day that is only 1400 in a week, barely half a pound, not 2 pounds.
I hope this levels out again. If my weight is still going up by next Sunday I am going to start tracking it again and see if I need to change anything.
I haven't added any carbs. If I have added anything it would be more healthy type fats from things like avocados and dairy. Maybe I need to watch those?

First, I suggest taking a deep breath. It could a number of things: water retention, hormonal cycle, less exercise, a metabolic adjustment, not enough fluids, not enough sleep, etc. My scale fluctuates between two pounds each day. I think the weekly weight is more accurate and a two week trend is ever better. I expect the daily fluctuations.
You might want to try shaking things up a bit - eat some different foods, increase the intensity of or change your exercise, drink more, etc. Avocado is pretty high in calories and good fat. You might want to lay off of it for a week and see it helps.
My basic message is not to worry!

You have done everything right and gained, I have done everything wrong and lost.
I agree, daily weighing is the issue, now what we are doing. That and all the water, etc issues. So I will go back to being "good", and see what happens. You will just relax and the scale will adjust. Or lets hope so.

Once we stop losing very much and are trying to retain, our bodies shift into a different mode and we tend to both store and use more glycogen. Since it takes 3x as much water to store glycogen, this makes us more susceptible to fluctuations on the scale.
When we diet, our body tends to pull energy from our fat store more than from our muscles (where muscle glycogen is stored) so we aren't constantly depleting and then replenishing glycogen. So we still have scale issues due to water retention but for most people (but not everyone) they are less dramatic and so not always as noticeable.

I have been doing the same thing lately. I am about 10# from my goal and it is going down SUPER slow and even up some days 2#. I'm having some energy problems as well so thryoid may need tweaking but can't do anything about that right now. What has helped me is using a calendar-type graph where I record my weight each day then average them for the week. That way, I know I have really lost or gained weight and not a daily fluctuation of water or whatever. I found it in the old Carbohydrate Addict's book. I have used it every day since surgery and it really is helpful when you are feeling discouraged about the "slowness" of weight loss. Just an idea.
Actually I do write down my daily weight and I have since shortly after my surgery.
My pattern used to be to stay the same weight for at least 2 or more days and then drop a bit and back to staying the same weight for several days. I may only drop .2 but I hardly ever lost 2 days in a row. What is strange is how the weight wouldn't vary by a tenth of an ounce between losses.
I rarely gained during that time, maybe 3 or 4 times in 10 months. I had several periods where I didn't lose anything for a week or more.
This last week I had 2 days where I stayed the same weight and then I went up a bit, down a bit, up a bit. Just not my usual pattern. Right now I am about 2 pounds over my low weight. I was at the same place on Saturday and then down a pound on Sunday and back up today.
The only changes I have made in the last week or so is that I am getting up earlier then usual and not getting as much sleep. I don't know if that contributes to anything.
I will continue to track my weight and if I see a gain next week I will start looking at my choices and making a few changes. Last time I regained my weight because I basically ignored my gains, chalking it up to rebound or bounce back. That may be the case here but I want to make sure I don't slip back into bad habits and then denial of those habits.
I was also thinking back to my weight loss with my first surgery. At that time I wasn'****ching what I ate other then to get in a lot of protein, but other then that I ate whatever I wanted, so in that situation I really felt like I had no control, that my weight would go where it went. I got down to about 117 or 118 for a very short period of time and then immediately bounced back to 120 and stayed there for nearly a year, with no effort on my part. Then I started regaining, slowly at first, 10 or 15 lbs the next year, 10 or 15 lbs the year after that. Still within acceptable range to me. It was after my 5th year that it really started coming on fast.
My last year before my revision I gained about 25 lbs in about 7 months.
