Hi Liz,

I too had to go through a Glucose tolerance test at the pathology lab and they discovered I wasn't crash hot when I fainted on the floor in Pathology.  Here is Australia for some reason our readings are different.  When I spiked on high sugar it was up over the 15 (270 US) mark when stable is between 4 - 8 (72 -144) and when I would faint it would be reading 1.2 - 2.3 (22 - 41)

It certainly isn't a nice feeling at all.

Karin, that's because in Australia, like Great Britian/Canada, you use the mmol/L system, whereas the US uses the mg/dl system.

I've heard the rule: "4 is on the floor" in reference to the British system.

To convert, here is the conversion:

Its an AWFUL feeling.  It does feel like dumping but if I take a glucose tablet or eat peanut butter I feel better within minutes.  If it was true dumping, no, it wouldn't work.  It does take time before you start feeling bad.

I too have woke up on the floor.  I was only out or a few seconds, but it was enough and I'm darned lucky I didn't hit my head on the island as I went down.

My RH typically is from drinking an adult beverage and eating simple carbs.  I know that if I drink, I CANNOT repeat CANNOT eat ANY simple carbs.

Now - I have had a small RH episode after eating sushi.  First time I could definitely tell it was what it was from (white carbs in the rice) the 2nd time was just a small flush.  Both times there was NO adult beverages involved.

Others have said they never know when it will happen.  If you can identify what your triggers are, stay away from them.

I know or did know some of my triggers. Spaghetti was a BIG one so I was careful with that. However, about 2 weeks ago, we were both craving spaghetti so I made some using angel hair pasta, and added meat to our sauce...My readings were rock steady. Go figure.

Thanks for the info..this forum is so knowledgeable!..if *when* this happens again I'm going to try some peanut butter and see if that helps..the trigger seems to be simple carbs for me..so far white rice and potatoes seem to be my trigger..crackers and pb are not an option for me as I am gluten free..so I hoping that maybe just some PB would help..I wonder if you are more prone to RHG if you easily dump, sounds like they are closely related...and early out I thought I was a non dumper..ha!

I would have said yes, but since those of us who are not RNY'ers and therefore do not dump, also can have it...however most of us had it pre-surgery even if not diagnosed.

Hi,

I have not had surgery, but will be having gastric sleeve. Does this also happen with gastric sleeve??? I could not tell from some of the articles that I have read if it is exclusive to RNY???

This may be a deal breaker for me if there is a problem down the road with gastric sleeve. Not sure yet though.

Thanks!

Lynn

It shouldn't happen with the sleeve or the DS. I'm sure there are exceptions but rare.
