Reactive Hypoglycemia question

Is there a "chicken and egg" relationship between low potassium and hypoglycemia?  It seems that no bariatric practice is recommending potassium supplementation and when folks start having hypoglycemia, they also test low in potassium. Is there a strong connection or just coincidence?

Thanks

Okay, I think it's just coincidence.

I've had reactive hypoglycemia (positively tested) since 1991. And in all my blood tests I have had in the last 20 years, no one has mentioned low potassium.

Now, it could be related to low normal...just because you are in normal range doesn't mean you aren't low...differeent labs, different results.

But I think it's coincidence.

Interesting... I just got my labs drawn - I'll definitely look at my potassium number.  I don't supplement potassium...

There is a connection, we actually use insulin in the hospital for patients with high potassium levels, because insulin drives potassium into the cells. We have a llittle iv ****tail whi*****ludes iv insulin, dextrose and sometime caluim iv too.
So if one has a spike in their insullin levels, I would expect their level to be low.  I am sure there is a more complicated explanation with the pathophysiology, but this is the way I remembered from nursing school.

Thanks, Maria. If there is a connection, I'm wondering if keeping potassium up to optimum levels would ward of reactive hypoglycemia in WLS patients.

That is a great thought.

I also wonder if there is a connection between some one like me who had insulin issues preop, being insulin resistance and secreting extra insulin and not being able to use it as an obese person, but as I get thinner will this keep happening and drop my blood sugars?

Great observation, and if this can be solved, alot of lws peeps will be happier and healthier!

Gina - got my labs today and my potassium is 4.4.  Range on my sheet is 3.4-5...

So my potassium is good and I get RH.

Interesting question. I had really low potassium after my WLS and had to be on it for awhile (it is nasty stuff) but the doc got me off of the prescription and told me to have a half a banana a day...guess you can over do the potassium. They said that the low potassium is common after surgery. But if my memory is correct, the potassium can also have an impact on your heart....

Low potassium is dangerous for your heart. But you can overdo it too. This is one reason that it's mostly only available in prescription form.

I don't see how supplementing potassium would prevent RH though. RH happens because of rapid emptying into the intestines and the resulting insulin response. While the insulin response can deplete your potassium, potassium doesn't make your food stay in your stomach longer or change your insulin response to food.

Oh and if anyone is on blood pressure meds, some of them deplete your potassium too.

Well, see that's the question. Seems folks are developing RH after a couple of years post-op and I just wonder which comes first low potassium or an insulin reaction. You know how much I trust what the medical community says about WLS and vitamin levels....only barely trust but verify a lot! lol
