Good Morning. Protein question for you

I posted this on our DS Facebook group too...
Following up on Cathy's question about protein...why is there snobbery about getting your protein from "real" food only? Protein is protein regardless of how you get it, isn't it? I've been warned that people can become "mushers" and not eat any dense food but nothing indicating it's bad nutritionally. Aren't we after good nutrition?

What's your take on this?

Have a great Saturday, y'all!

Guess I haven't seen this, so I'm not really sure what the issue is.

What is constued as "real food"?  Dense meats?  Greek Yogurt considered "not real food"?

Food is food.  I still don't agree you can get all your protein needs from just food, especially those of us that malabsorb.

BINGO!  But, there are some "old school" folks who think we should make our bodies absorb regardless of the nutrition, or lack of good nutrition that is apparent on our initial labs. That first year after WLS when we aren't getting enough of anything would scare me not to get protein from shakes. My protein labs went down a couple of points when I dropped 30g of protein a day from shakes over a 5-6 month period. My dietitian had suggested I was getting too much protein. Guess my labs proved her wrong so she bumped me back up to 120g a day via shakes.

Got my labs drawn the other day.  We'll see where I'm at.  I'm sure a few vits were forgotten, but I did get K retested.

lol  I'm wearing them almost every day...I need the black ones too. They are the perfect lift for most of my dress pants...except those that I tried on when you were here and immediately got too long very fast. @_@

I think part of it is to prove to the world (and yourself) that in spite of rearranging your guts, you can still be normal and drinking protein shakes aren't what most normal people do. Yes, body builders drink shakes but we all know they aren't "normal", LOL

Personally I think shakes are great but once cleared for regular food, we do need to eat our protein that way for some meals, and suppliment to get to the magic number per day with the shakes. And adding protein powder to food is also a great idea.

Protein shakes shouldn't be our only form of protein but we shouldn't discard it in favor of JUST regular food.

I also wonder just how much protein someone is getting when they say they get ALL their protein from food.

In my opinion Protein is protein. My NUT wanted me off shakes early out and to get my protein from dense food because she  said it is more filling and will hold you longer.  I tried but that is when the grazing started again so I went back to shakes. I think that with the shakes (and it took me months to find ones I could tolerate)  I know the exact stats and can track better.  Plus it helps me to have one after dinner so I do not graze in the evening.  If I were to grab a cheese stick as they suggested I'd still want more.  So I don't care how you slice it. As long as you meet your numbers, it counts!  Shake or dense protein, protein is protein.

Other may disagree, as i said this is my opinion.

Have a great Saturday all!

Under our plan we are not suppose to be drinking any liquid calories, including protein shakes...our nutritionist want us to be eating "dense" protein so we don't start getting "too" hungry..I think the reasoning is at some point liquids are no longer going to be filling and therefore you will drink a protein supplement and then eat something you weren't planning on eating. In fact, my husband who had part one of the DS (a sleeve) had actually bought into this idea and it took some convincing from me that this was bogus..personally I get hungry when I don't get enough protein in and I say for the first year why stretch your pouch trying to force yourself to eat dense food all the time..I physically could not get enough protein in if it wasn't for the shakes..although I do eat a "normal" meal for dinner. Anyway, this whole anti protein shake really gets me heated!!
