My 1 year labs
Finally, the hospital mailed me a copy, but I might need a little help interpreting these. I feel really stupid looking at these! Gina?? Anyone??
Here's what I got:
B12 - 1600, says normal is 211 - 946 pg/mL
Folate - 18, says normal is >9.1 ng/mL
Sodium - 137, says normal is 135 - 145 mmol/L
K - 3.9, says normal is 3.5 - 5.1 mmol/L
CL - 102, says normal is 98 - 107 mmol/L
HCO3 - 29, says normal is 22 - 32 mmol/L
Glucose - 97, says normal is 70 - 99 mg/dL (does this seem a little high?)
BUN - 22, says normal is 6 - 20 mg/dL (it is flagged as high)
CREAT - .6, says normal is .5 - 1.0 mg/dL
B/C Ratio - 37, says normal is 6 - 30 (it is flagged as high)
MDRD GFR - >60 (what the heck is this? It says something about renal disease)
Calcium - 9.7, says normal is 8.4 - 10.2 mg/dL
TP - 6.5, says normal is 6.4 - 8.3 g/dL
ALB - 4.3, says normal is 3.4 - 4.8 g/dL
SGOT - 16, says normal is 0 - 31 U/L
SGPT - 14, says normal is 0 - 31 U/L
ALP - 56, says normal is 35 - 104 U/L
Total Bili - .5, says normal is 0 - 1.0 mg/dL
Globulin - 2.2, says normal is 2.3 - 3.5 g/dL (this is flagged as low. Is it important?)
A/G Ratio - 2.0, says normal is 1.0 - 2.0

LABS - page 2
LIPIDS
Trig - 58, normal is less than 150 mg/dL
Chol - 159, normal is less than 200 mg/dL
HDL - 67, normal is great than 40 mg/dL
VLDL CHOL - 12, normal is less than 40 mg/dL
LDL - 80, normal is less than 130 mg/dL
Cardiac Risk - 2.4, normal is 3.7 - 5.6 (I assume this is a good thing??)
Iron Serum - 106, normal is 37 - 145 mcg/dL
TIBC - 335, normal is 250 - 450 mcg/dL (what is this?)
% saturation - 32, normal is 15 - 50% (good, right?)
Vitamin B1 - 157, normal is 70 - 180 nmol/L
Then on the CBC differential, there is a bunch of stuff I don't get, but it all looks normal except:
% Total Neuts - 77.9, normal is 42.5 - 74.6 % (this is flagged as high. What is it?)
% Lymphocytes - 15.1, normal is 16.8 - 44.9 % (this is flagged as low. What is it?)
Ferritin - 15.7, normal is 13 - 150 ng/mL (is this getting kind of low?)
Vitamin D - 64.1, normal is 30 - 100 ng/mL (this was 90 at my 6 month labs, but I cut it back a bit)
hsCRP (cardiac stuff) - 0.3, normal is under 5.0 mg/L (I think this is good)

Cholesterol is looking pretty good.
Iron serum is looking great but you want your ferritin higher. Ferritin is the stored iron and you want that closer to the top of the range. Carbonyl and heme iron supplements have helped me get those numbers up.
B1 looks pretty good. It can go to the top of the range if you want to supplement more.
Add the D3 back in, 90 isn't too high. The new top of the range is 150.
Looks pretty good all in all. A few things to tweak but you're doing great.
Did they test protein, albumin and prealbumin? What about vitamin A and zinc?

Thanks Gina!! You are the best!
So, I think these are the protein tests:
TP - 6.5, says normal is 6.4 - 8.3 g/dL (total protein)
ALB - 4.3, says normal is 3.4 - 4.8 g/dL (albunim)
Maybe they didn't test the prealbumin??
I take 15 mg of Carbonyl (vitalady tender chewables) of iron a day, but I consume lots of dairy. Should I be taking it right before bed a couple of hours after having dairy. Or, would you increase the amount?
I can't find a Vitamin A or a Zinc on the list. Hmmm?
I will start taking more D again. I was taking 10,000 mcg per day and now only take it 3 times each week.

Albumin is good to go and protein is pretty good. You can try to shoot for 7 in protein but some of us have trouble getting out of the high 6's.
You probably need to increase your iron to 4 or so chewables. You can take them all at the same but take them a couple of hours away from dairy, calcium, caffeine, whole wheat and eggs. You might even ask your doc for a prescription for Proferrin Forte. It's heme iron and has the least amount of intestinal stress and you can take it with other vites.
Are you taking a vitamin A supplement or is there vitamin A (palmitate) in your multi?
10,000IUs of D3 daily would be a good thing.

Do you mean 1 chewable? That is 25mg which is a tiny dosage. No one should take less than 50-60mg but with ferritin like yours, you would need to take 4-6 per day. Are you taking your iron with vitamin C? if not, that is why you aren't absorbing the iron. The chewable irons from vitalady.com don't have vitamin C in them but the 60mg capsules have the vitamin C in the capsules - you might want to switch to them and take 2 per day to start and get rechecked in 2 months and adjust from there. If you continue the chewables, you need to take 200mg of vitamin C per 30mg of iron.
I would go back to where you were with your vitamin D- 90 is perfect.
Your total protein is low, you might want to increase your protein intake - add a protein drink.
