It took time but...

I am finally to the point where my blood sugar readings are NORMAL regardless of what I eat.

Tonight we had something that pre-op would have sent my blood sugar to 250+ at the 2 hour mark without extra insulin. Tonight, my 2 hour was 119, and my fastings have been in the 80-98 range. In fact most postpradial readings have been under 135 for the last month.

I came off insulin in Feb but have remained on metformin (a very low dose of 500mgs now versus 2000 mgs pre-op) since. I am going to finish out this month's prescription and then have a go at doing without it.

Btw, normal ranges are defined like this:
Normal and Target Blood Glucose Ranges Target Blood Glucose Levels in People Who Have Diabetes
Normal Blood Glucose Levels in People Who Do Not Have Diabetes
Upon waking—fasting 70 to 99 mg/dL
After meals 70 to 140 mg/dL
Before meals 70 to 130 mg/dL
1 to 2 hours after the start of a meal below 180 mg/dL

You can see the chart here: http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/hypoglycemia/

As you can see, I'm in the NORMAL for those without diabetes. :)

WOW Liz that is fantastic!!  Mine was borderline so I got to come off my metformin the day of surgery and haven't had to take any since.
Hope you can remain off of it when you finish this months prescription.

Linda, I hope so too...

I think why mine took longer was I was very much insulin dependent for a type 2. My normal usage of insulin depended on what I ate but was at least 45 units per day as that was what was delivered to me thru my insulin pump.

If I ate something like spaghetti, I could easily exceed 100 units in a day.

Isn't it a great feeling, Liz? I am so happy for you. Just wait until you no longer take metformin.

I took insulin for over two decades. I still can't believe I have normal levels. Do you find yourself still testing? My doctor told me I could stop testing six times a day maybe two but I can't. I just know this will not last. How could it? I was sure as I started to eat more carbs,  I would require some insulin. But so far so good.

I have also not had any lows. It is so weird.

This weekend the family went camping and I didn't have to think about all those diabetes "extras" that I used to need. I could be spontaneous, if you know what I mean. Although, I still took my meter and glucose tablets for any lows. Not needed.

Again, congrats.

Yes, I still test...about 3-8 times per day. I gave away my pump supplies and a month ago, gave away my excess insulin (keeping one vial for me). I found an endo's office who was willing to take them. Figured someone who needed it but couldn't afford it could benefit from my good fortune.

The only lows I've had were the two days before I took my insulin pump off for the last time on the 1st of Feb. I knew it was time to come off it when that happened.

Currently my 7 day average is 102, my 30 day average is 124...so it's going in the right direction. Pre-op my A1C was 8.6, last test in mid April, it was 6.3, still higher than I wanted but MUCH IMPROVED.

Congratulations Liz!!! This a HUGE milestone!!!! I was pre-diabetic prior to surgery and the fear of diabetes was greater than my fear of surgery.  Congratulations!!!!
