Clear liquid suggestions please

Hi everyone, in a week and a half I will be going back in to have a hysterectomy. I was told that I needed to do clear liquids the day before the surgery and after the surgery. I will be allowed to have protein drinks after that but not those two days. Here is my question, shouldn't I try to get some type of clear liquid protein in the day before surgery? I can have broth but I have never tried to put the unflavored protein in something hot. Can anyone tell me how to do this or even if I should?

What you want to do is make a small cool 4-6oz liquid slurry with the protein and pour hot liquid on top and stir. You want to always keep protein at or below 130 degrees.

They must not be having you do a bowel prep before your hysti. I had no food restrictions but I had to do a bowel prep for my recent hysti. I just drank my usual protein shakes as soon as I could after. The pain meds made me sick though and I never had trouble pre-WLS with pain meds.

I am doing a bowel prep. She said clear liquids the day before and I start bowel prep at noon. She said I could only have clear liquids. I asked could I have protein drinks and she said only if it's clear. She said the day of surgery that afternoon, they will bring me broth and juice. I can't have any protein drink that day but I can the day after. I thought it would be bad to not have protein for 2 days so I was trying to get some in the day before.

Good idea. You need protein to help with healing.

Isopure makes a clear, ready to drink protein.  They have several flavors, and I think they all taste nasty, but if I was hungry I'd drink it.  Since it's only two days, I'd start out with broth, chicken and beef.  See if that will hold you.

If you want to add protein be careful of adding it to hot liquids.  If the liquid is over 130 degrees (which is just about tepid), the stuff clumps up.  Instead, add protein powder to cool liquids, then heat them, but not too hot (for instance not to boiling) because I understand the heat breaks down the protein.

I have protein coffee every day.  I mix up 1 1/2 scoops powder in 1/2 cup water.  I add 1/2 this mixture to my mug and pour brewed decaf coffee on top.  Tastes like a latte.  I'm quite addicted to it.

I did unflavored protein in hot tea right after surgery by making a slurry and it was ok.  I do protein in my decaf every morning.  I would ask about unflavored protein.  Maybe they don't want you having anything added to the clear liquids.
I tried the isopure and thought it was nasty.  That was before RNY.  Haven't tried it since.

Thanks everyone, I have the isopure but it's red. She said no red or purple so I can't have that. I can have chicken broth and beef broth. I may be safe and stick to that. If I'm weak I won't be doing too much anyway right? LOL I will try adding it to the chicken broth by making a slurry. Thanks for your help.

Tea is usually something they let you have as a clear liquid, and Syntrax Nectar makes an Iced Tea flavor...  i usually double the amount of plain water i add it to, so it's essentially clear.   The broths will be good for you and give you protein too... just not as much as you are used to.  You'll do fine, I'm sure and it'll only be a couple of days before you are right back on track.  Good luck with your surgery Koko.

Thank you, where can I get syntrax nectar? Is that something that I have to order or can I get it a GNC or Vitamin Shoppe? I only have a little time and I'm not sure it will get here in time if I order it. I appreciate your support.

Koko, I buy mine from www.mybariatricpantry.com  They are the least pricey that I've found so far.  They are located in Georgia, their orders usually ship within 24 hours, and you can call them to see if they can get it to you in time.   They are very nice people.  Being so close, it might not be a problem at all.  I don't know, but they might even be able to sell you some single packs so you don't get stuck with a big canister in case you don't care for it all that much.  Good luck!
