I sometimes drink right up to eating but I don't drink with meals and never have so it isn't a big deal for me.  I wait for 30 or more before starting to drink again.  Sometime up to and hour if I feel really full.  The reason we were given was to not wash your food out of your stomach.

I was told same thing 15 minutes before 30 minutes following a meal nothing to drink. No carbonated beverages either. Which I do drin****asionally now, but for longest couldn't would make me very uncomfortable.
Same reason I was given, liquids wash the food thru pouch too fast. And early out you need all the space for food for good nutrition.
I had went to several different drs seminars and each gave about the same Verbatim speech.
On a different note, prior to my DS I went on a diet go figure. One of things I did was drink an extra large glass of ice cold water 20-30 minutes before I ate. I lost about 75 lbs in less than 3 months. But after Katrina stress eating and whatever was available for 3 weeks immediately following Katrina I gained all of weight I'd lost besides about 50 more between 8/29/05 and 5/07.

I'm going to follow the no drink rule this time. What can it hurt?
I want to maximize all of the tricks.

Gina - I've wondered about that with the DS'ers and VSG'rs before - since you have your valve, is it really an issue?

I can see those of us who have the open hole that lets food slide through easily...

I drink up until I eat (now, didn't use to), then wait 30-60 minutes after before I drink anything again.  Sometimes its hard, but I've always heard that those who are the most successful are those that follow this rule religiously.

The most successful person I know is Vitalady and I don't know what she does or what her take on this issue is. I plan on asking. lol

I read once (and I can't remember if Vitalady said something like it or not) that WL surgeons' philosophies were in 2 camps. 1) Make them eat dense protein to keep them from overeating  and don't let them drink liquids to wash the dense protein through too quickly. Hopefully, they will lose enough weight before their health totally fails due to malnutrition. 2) Let them drink protein shakes to keep their health and lose weight. Hopefully, they don't have mental food issues and they won't sabotage their WL with junk food.

I drink up to the time of eating and try my best to wait an hour after eating before drinking again.  It seems to work for me.

I haven't had surgery yet, but I have been reading as much info as I can about the DS. I recently read that drinking with meals is primarily not recommended during the first 1 to 2 years post-op because there is concern it can cause your "new" stomach to stretch. A study was done and those that drank with meals had a stomach that could hold a few ounces more than those that didn't at the end of 2 years. After the first 2 years drinking with meals didn't really make a difference because the size of the stomach normally reaches it post-op capacity by then.

Sorry I wish I could remember where I read it though. I've been looking for over an hour trying to find the article. If I find it I promise to share the link.

Now that makes sense. The same would seem true if a person ate until full to the top at every meal and continued to push the envelope. If you do find the reference I'd like to read it. Thank you.

Now that makes much more sense than the "because we said so" answer I've gotten.

Thanks for that.

This is the one area in which I have the most trouble adhering to the rules.  For one thing, I have a terrible time getting in enough fluids anyway.  I don't drink tons when I eat but I don't have a problem drinking either.  In fact I have my one diet soda a week every Friday night with Sabbath dinner (de-carbonated, though).  I heard the same spiel as everyone else about how it would push the food through too fast.
But then what about soup?  It has solids in it so it's not just a liquid and it usually is served at the beginning of a meal.
I get more burpy when I drink, but I don't get hungrier faster so I'm sticking with what works for me instead of the generic, "don't"

After I got to maintenance, I will drink up until I get my meal (if we are out) but I dont drink with, and wait probably an hour after.

It only took forgetting it once and taking a big ol swig of drink (I am a swigger, not a dainty sipper) and chewed up steak burbled back up into my throat.

BLURG!!  Lesson learned!

And too, for me, since I *do* still get hungry and on dense proteins it comes every 3 hoursish, I do what I can to help me stay full longer, and not drinking with/after certainly helps, for me.
