Hi, I am a male 5'-7", 204 lbs (bmi approx 32) , high cholesterol, pre diabetic, and slightly elevated blood pressure. I am concerned that I could possibly not be able to control my weight loss and become sick with the vsg. I have about 60 lbs. to loose and definitely dont want the lap band because of the problems associated with it. I am a newbie and appreciate any input.

thanks
Jose

Hi Jose,
Welcome!  I'm not an expert in the VSG but I think it's a wise choice. You probably can control the weight loss with a VSG far easier than with any other surgery.

Welcome to the LW board.

I'm sure others who have the VSG will chime in soon enough but I think you are making a wise choice for yourself.

Hey there Jose,
I believe if I had a choice I would have gone with a VSG. Many have had much success with it. I do believe you would be able to control your weight with no problem. Good Luck and welcome to the board.

Jose, I just attended my local support group meeting and someone brought up the question of losing too much weight. The surgeon stated that unless someone has other issues  (anorexia, bulimia, other health problems), no one loses too much with either RNY or VSG.

My concern is losing enough! I really want to get to a normal range BMI, but know that everyone is different and some of my loss is connected to my body type, genetics, metabolism, age, etc. BUT the surgery has given me a tool to get where I have not been in 25 years. AND I know I can keep whatever weight I lose from coming back, if I use this wonderful tool.

Hi, I had the VSG and love it. I lost about the weight you are looking to drop. Trust me your body will stop where you need to stop. I am doing great and feeling wonderful. It's like anything else you need to look into all your options. It is a wonderful tool...I wish I was able to do this years ago, I can't believe the difference in how I feel!
Good luck!

I had my DS surgery 4 yrs ago. Never made it to goal weight, have regained about 35-40 lbs in last couple yrs. Would lose and regain the same 8-10 lbs in the last yr. My BMI is a 32 or 33 right now, having my stomach resleeved Wednesday. 4 yrs ago most surgeons were doing a larger sleeve because of malabsorption factored in. You also need to figure in normal bounce back of a few pounds most people have. I think with the VSG you would be in more control of your weightless since you wouldn't have the malabsorption.

Take care good luck whatever your decision.
