Denial letter!

I had complications after my RNY. I had a bowel obstruction and nearly died. I am a teacher. I was trying to get my national boards at this same time. I pulled out because I was really sick.  I had to appeal for pulling out of national boards. I got another denial letter today. Apparently nearly dying doesn't = illness of the teacher in the state of NC! I can not tell you how devalued I feel right now. I am ready to do anything else in the world than teach. I feel like getting a t shirt made that says I am a teacher KICK ME! I am utterly discusted. Not sure what to do. I am so broke and about to face 2 months without an income. I have a Master's degree yet can not seem to find a part time job to help make ends meet. I am feeling that flight or fight response kicking in again. Feeling like Forest Gump...RUN FOREST RUN. Thanks for letting me vent.

Does anyone know what you can do with a teaching degree besides teach? I am so sick of being STOMPED on! We found out today we are not getting our county supplement. Now I have to pay back this money to the state or they will probably dock my pay. Feeling utter frustration right now. This in addition to having to deal with a sick mother in law, end of grade testing and craziness of the end of the year. I could just SCREAM!

RNY on 10/21/08 with
Danielle - sorry to hear this happening to you.  I too have a Masters degree and can't find a job... I've applied for over 40.. but have only heard from one that said "thanks but no thanks"...

Sorry to hear NC isn't valuing their teachers.  Its very sad when they think they're a disposalbe commodity.  I hope it gets better for you.

Oh Danielle, I'm so sorry....all that National Board stufff is truly a pain in the BUTT!!  The extra money each month is nice but not sure it's worth it in the long run!

Our county has REALLY been able to weather the economic down turn fairly well....our only consequence is that our class sizes have increased a bit because they are not hiring any extra teachers at this time.  We were already super low so I only went from 17 kids to 21 so I can't really complain.

I'm curious why ya'll don't get paid during the summer.....our salary gets divided between 12 checks throughout the year....I thought that was pretty standard,

Have you ever thought of keeping a couple of kids at your house this summer (for some of your friends who need summer daycare?)  My friend charges 75 dollars a week (per child) and keeps 5 kids.....it's not a huge amount of money but it pays the bills.....

Praying for you....God will work things out in his way!!

I, too, am a teacher, but in Florida. We do not get paid during the summer either. Teachers are on furlough during the summer. Even if they divide your pay up over 12 months, you are not really getting paid for the summer - the state is just keeping your money without giving you any interest on it.

Other professions that are seasonal are eligible to receive unemployment benefits during their off season, but that is not so with teachers. I would be willing to bet that if you really figured out our hourly pay we would barely make minimum wage. Most teachers that I know work 10 to 12 hour days and we get paid for 7.5 hours.

But, I went into the profession because I love helping people learn. Obviously we don't do it for the money!  LOL

Our district considers us 10 month employees. They do not offer year long pay. We are to budget our money to take care of those months that we "don't work". I actually do work in the summer but just don't get paid. Most teachers do. Planning and getting ready for the next year is what I spend most of my summer days doing and researching.
This plan of theirs is all good if LIFE didn't get in the way. I haven't had a year yet that we didn't have to go into our savings. Sickness, Transmission falls out of the car, family issues, always something.

God has a plan for my life. I am praying for him to open the doors that need to be opened and close those that need to be closed. It was my plan to become a school teacher. He may have another plan for my life. I am open to what ever he has instore for me.

I'm sorry you are having to go through this.  Being here in NC, and recieving funds from the state, I know how broke the state is and that we are all getting pinched.  With the changes that are getting ready to happen in Medicaid, my income and my staff's will change seriously.  It sometimes seems like they are balancing the budget between the kids and the handicapped.

I would check with some of the private tuitering agencies.  While my DD was in undergrad school, she made really good $$ working for one of those in Atlanta.

You are so right~ sad but true. The lottery money was just a bait and switch. We all fell for it. Where's all that money?

After reading your post, but not reading yet the subsequent responses, I just want to hug you!

Then, my first instinct is to hire a lawyer because this just plain STINKS ..trying to be PG. here...

I also have been out of work for a long time so i feel your pain, my mom is very sick and in rehab..so I'll be swinging some Lizzy's, keeping you and your mother in law in my prayers and hoping that the people in charge change their mind.

Oh hun, I have no clue but wanted to show you some support. I did like the idea of the sitting thing ( I have done it in the past) and possibly the tutoring. Sylvan, huntington etc..

Or better yet, start your own tutoring throughout the summer. 1 hour a day, 5 days a week, for say 75 or less... I know many who pay this around me. Can make flyers and hand them out to kids at the high school, can be a...."Get ready for the SAT study group, or Help Im failing MATH!!! I dont know just trying to help...BIG HUGS and sending many Lizards to you!
