This is going to sound like such a stupid question but I need to be pointed to the direction of something that tells me what all these protein powder drink things are for.

I think I probably don't understand yet how the diet afterwards is supposed to work and how much nutrition Im supposed to get from where for how long

I don't want to screw up my chances because I don't know the best way to be sucessful.

so far all I have from my doc is:

Purchase the vitamins, supplements, protein powders and non-perishable food items that you will need for the first few weeks after surgery. If you buy and taste-test all the possible vitamins and protein drinks in advance, you will have less worry when you get home from the hospital. Remember to have a food processor or blender for preparing puree foods and a pill crusher or mortar and pestle for crushing medication. Medication doesn’t necessarily have to be crushed; they can be broken into smaller pieces.

Doctor will require Gastric Sleeve and Bypass patients to take   Nexium Mups for 6  months. We strongly recommend you buy  the medication  while in Mexico so you do not have to worry about it when you get home. Included in your surgery fee is a 2 week supply. Patients who fail to take the Nexium may experience nausea, reflux and swelling which may lead to difficulty in eating. We recommend you avoid complications that are very easily preventable and plan on taking the Nexium for at least 6 months. Patients who smoke may need to take it for a longer time.

Ask Nina--she will give you more details if you need them. That's what she is there for. 10 days clear liquids right after surgery, 10 days full (or milk-based) liquids, 10 days purees and then 10 days soft foods. She will tell you what you need to know. The first 10 days you don't worry so much about protein or calories--just liquids.

You won't get to enjoy protein powders for a few days, I believe it's day 11 if your sleeve tolerates it.  Buy some samples.  My tastes changed post sleeve.  Plain water for me is not an option, but I loved it pre-sleeve.

You won't take suppliments for at least 10 days either.

I lived on organic chicken stock from Cost Co for the first two weeks.  The sodium was soothing to my sleeve.  You will take it slow and incorporate one item at a time.  No worries, they will send you home with lots of info and you can e-mail Gaby, or post here when you questions or concerns.

I bought 2 weeks of nexium mups in MX, then got a prescription from my doctor here in Indiana for the rest.  Just depends on what your plans are.

I bought 4 boxes of pain relieves from MX thinking that I would need them.  I had an epidural in the hospital.  I haven't used the pain killers myself but my husband uses them when he gets an occasional  headache.  They are sublingual and takes the headache away within 2 minutes.  He loves them.

How much should I plan on taking in cash for things like the mups???

Thank you both so much for all of the answers.

We only brought like $75 and Nina will tell you not to bring much either. You can pay for things with credit cards.

Another happy Aceves patient here--no post-op pain or nausea, easy recovery.  I bought a lot of protein samples before surgery, too, and threw most of them out.  I drink the Premier Protein RTD from Costco now.  The first few days post-op is just a struggle to get enough fluid in, don't worry about protein.  And use your spirometer at home--

If you stick to the plan, it works!
