weight regain
So out of boredum, I was reading one of the other boards, someone answered a question about goals to say that during year 3, a 20 lb gain was "normal" I think was the word she used. I guess that is after malabsorption is over and we can eat more as time goes on. Seems like we LWs talk about a 5 or so lb bounce back, but 20 is more than I have ever heard before for someone who is still careful about how they eat. I know we can regain it all back if we aren't careful, but 20# as normal????

Maybe 20 pounds would be normal for someone 6 feet tall but I think that is high too. I was told about 5 - 8 pounds of bounce back. Regain is more up to each one of us and I think there is a difference between bounce back and regain.

At my 6 month visit, I asked the bariatric internist about this. She said 5-10 lb may be the norm, but anything else is excessive. She said that it happens, because people return to former eating habits. I think with malabsorptive surgeries, people may become comfortable eating some of the wrong things and still have the weight come off. When this stops and eating behaviors haven't changed, weight regain occurs.
Weight regain with any of the surgeries is a real possibility, which is why we have to continue with self-monitoring, journaling, regular weighing, and exercise.
