Good Morning. Things that make you go hmmm...
Did you ever wonder why there aren't more self-help diet and exercise books written by previously morbidly obese people who have successfully kept their weight off for, oh say, 10 years after implementing their self-help? The 2 I can think of are both dead but not for reasons related to their diet. One died after falling and hitting his head on an icy sidewalk and one was shot and killed by a jealous lover.
Did you ever wonder how theory miraculously becomes thought of as fact or science? Evolution comes to mind as does "oatmeal helps lower cholesterol". lol
What makes you go hmmm?

I gave that a little thought.Geneen Roth and Michelle May have both had their weight off for 10 years or more. Of course they don't really advocate a diet of any kind. They both deal with the head part of our obesity and that has always been a big issue for me. They both write about mindful eating and emotional eating. If I could conquer that these last twenty would go away.

A VERY interesting question . My answer to that is that though my body WANTED to be MO since childhood my relatively healthy low fat low sugar high fiber "Chinaman " diet kept me at LW level ( and I only gained from a 165 lb size 8 chunk to 238 in the last few years because of metabolic and hormonal changes directly related to diabetes ) ...
so maybe they never got MO in the first place .....
Ill tell ya Gina and lightweights ... if I can ever get to MY 115 lbs goal weight FOR REAL and maintain it successfully the way I eat ..I'll probably write a book and perhaps come out of the closet about my WLS ... ( though Im SURE it would be generally misunderstood both from the MO side being a lightweight ....and normal people's side who think WLS is "cheating " )
but I think having a long- term HEALTHFUL way to eat and control weight post RNY and even lapband ( or even no surgery at all ) IS really important - maybe more important than embarassment and vilification on a personal level .
I DO think its a combination of eating the right things ( developing a LIKING for fresh vegetables and lowfat / low sugar / fat free/ unprocessed choices ... ) and also even MORE importantly getting the HEAD right where the obsession with having food and more food for emotional /comfort /boredom / bad habit reasons LIFTS .
I'm still working on that part !

Food lobbies are very much responsible for our categorizing vegetables and cake together as " carbs " , which in my mind is DELIBERATELY misleading ....
the truth is U can't really say that fast food for instance is not suitable for schoolchildren without being threatened by a huge lawsuit by the fast food companies who are benefiting hugely by making America's children gigantic using their school lunches ...
U can't say dairy is fattening ( which it totally IS , especially anything BUT 100% fat free products ) ( which are still high in milk sugars ) without being attacked by the dairy industry ...
so anyone who wants to reform our nation's diet and has something meaningful to say ( or a policy they would like to implement ) will very quickly be muzzled by these special interests and the legislators who are beholden to them .

I'm with Ava. I think our nation, maybe most of the industrial world, doesn't know how to eat anymore. They don't know what healthy is or portion size is. Broccalli is only acceptable if it is covered in cheese sauce. Beef is only acceptable if it is in a white bun with mayo. Schools don't teach it, just like they don't teach the multiplication tables anymore. They don't learn it from their parents, who don't cook or eat at home. The new "healthy" is a chicken sandwich from fast food instead of a burger.
As for why their aren't more books by those folks, their probably aren't very many of those folks around. I meet a lot of folks who had surgery 10 yrs ago and are back to their orignial weight or bigger. And we all know how many times we each lost it and gained it back.
