Really? Dumping now?

Hello all,
Unless you have been around here a while you probably don't know me as I haven't been here recently. I was a regular for over a year and life happened and I have not been around much. I have kept track of the people I know by lurking on the facebook group page.
For those of you who don't know me, I am 2.5 years out from RNY. I lost about 89 pounds of the 100 pounds I wanted to lose and then just stalled. Doctor was happy with that and said I shouldn't worry about it. I have never had the restriction I thought I should have and have never had any issue with sugar and dumping or fat and dumping. Although I didn't lose all of the weight I wanted I did run a half marathon last November. Since then I got lazy and haven't been running. I HATE the treadmill. Over the winter, without running I have gained 10 pounds. I have started running again and plan to get that 10 pounds off before it becomes 15, then 20, etc.
So here is the question....The last two times I have eaten a load of sugar, both within the last two weeks I have gotten kind of sick feeling. Very hot and sweaty, nauseous and just want to lay down. That sounds very much like dumping to me. Is it possible to develop a sugar intolerance this far out from surgery. I also just got my two year labs back. At first glance they were all fine. I am going to post them here for the experts opinion. Anyway, my fasting glucose was 85 which is great but my HgbA1C was 5.6 which isn't diabetic but is in the higher risk catagory. Is it possible that eating surgar is sending my BS high and then it drops low? Opinions? I am anxious to know what you think.

Thanks,
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl.  Miss you around here but I keep up with you on FB too.  How much time between your "dumping" and the sugar you ate?  I've seen RNY folks talk about reactive hypoglycemia developing the further out you get and I'm wondering if it might be that.

I start feeling bad about 30 to 44 minutes after I am done eating the sugar stuff.  I am talking quite a sugar load. The first time was a small Wendy's frosty and today was a salted carmel hot chocolate from Ghiradelli chocolate. A small but very sweet. I rarely eat more than a couple of bites of that stuff. This is the first couple of times in months.

I'm sure some of the folks that really know will chime in but I think that's reactive hypoglycemia. I seem to remember 45 minutes after having something to eat was how you might know if it's dumping or hypoglycemia. Sometimes it doesn't even have to be sugar, just carbs or just about anything. Try keeping some peanut butter crackers on hand, if you start feeling a spell coming on, eat a couple of them.

Cheryl, that's reactive hypoglycemia. (some medical journals call it "late dumping" and so do many surgeonsbut ENDOS call it RH)

You can read the articles I'm collecting here.

I hope this helps clear things up.

Hi Cheryl!!  Good to see you again.

I have Reactive Hypoglycemia and my trigger is drinking alcohol (beer/wine) and eating simple carbs - I just can't mix those 2.  I've even had a RH episode WITHOUT drinking.. and couldn't figure out what triggered it.

You get hot, sweaty - almost a dumping feeling.  I eat a spoonful of peanut butter, or like Gina said, peanut butter crackers - it almost seems counterintuitive to me to eat more carbs, but it works.

Just plain sugar will make it happen again.. so a good idea to mix some protein in with it...
