Good Morning. Dietitian appt not covered by insurance

Dang! Got and EOB in the mail yesterday saying that my appt in Dr Elariny's office will likely cost me $523. I made the appointment with the dietitian and I'm guessing the claim was totally denied. Crap! It was a good appointment too. She had done her homework and talked over specific labs with Dr E before we met. Was it worth $523? That's 60 days of vitamins and protein powder for me. I guess I'll call and see if I can get hold of the case worker and see what can be done. {sigh}

Read the fine print!

Y'all have a great Tuesday.

Thanks for the lesson learned.

I'm interested in what will be covered now that I will be changing insurance carriers.  Probably nothing, as I'm no longer obese.  That said, I'll need to find a surgeon for follow up care in your neck of the woods.  I'm certainly not driving 7 hours to Charlotte for a 5 minute consult with my surgeon.  Or should I skip the follow up visits as long as I'm not having problems?  What to do?

Maybe the surgeon's office will let you pay the "insurance covered amount" or whatever the heck they call it.  They inflate the prices so much, then write off what the insurance negotiated price doesn't pay.  What a racket.  I should be in health care, it's higher finance, than the finance industry.

You probably don't need a surgeon as a matter of yearly follow ups but you do need a PCP that will listen to you, order your labs and is familiar with the RNY. If you do have problems, you have 2 great hospitals with thriving bariatric programs close by. My surgeon is at both but has trained the ER staff at Fairfax Hosp in Falls Church.

Our Nut appointments for life are covered in our surgery package.  But when I was in the hospital with my amnesia episode, they denied the neurologist because it wasn't "preauthorized".  Insurance
I guess I forgot, duh.

I think my insurance covers a limited number of visits a year, in their wellness program.  If yours doesn't, I would ask them to reduce the cost.  $532 is a lot for one visit for someone who doesn't even have an MD.  My neurologist wasn't that much.  A freind who has a high deductable insurance routinely tells Drs she doesn't have insurance and gets much better rates than those of us who do and then the insurance/drs cut a deal about how much they will pay.  My surgery (hospital part) was 66,000 but I can assure you neither the insurance or I paid that much for it.

I talked to the case manager at the surgeon's office. She said to call the billing company and make sure I was denied because nutritional visits are excluded. Once she knows that, she'll work with me on reducing the bill. Thanks, feeling a little better.

"Hello, insurance company?  Yes, I'd like to let you know that in March I will be having an amnesia event and I'd like to request preauthorization for a neurologist."

Then they'd authorize a psych consult, but still deny the neuro consult.

I am going to ask to speak with the nutritionist today when I go in to followup from this last surgery. I know I dont have to pay because of Tricare but it makes me wonder what happens when he retires.....Hmmmm something to think about...

I won't be able to get Tricare Prime until I turn 60 but I'm hearing pretty good things about it from one of the guys in the office. Swinging lizards...

My nutritionalist isn't covered, either, and she worked out a reasonable rate for me.  $523 is an awful lot of money for one visit.
