water retention...post-op
Does everyone retain huge amounts of water when given IV's???... I'm trying to remember back to my c-section and I don't think I retained more than 10# or so??? Maybe the euphoria of bringing home a sweet little baby made me forget???
I'm sure I'll have some more last minute thoughts this week... thanks for listening!

I did but I was retaining anyway and had to have Lasix 2x while in the hospital. But I think I was only about 6-8lbs more than my sugery date and it wasn't a big deal because I knew it was a possibility.

Meg....I was only in the hospital overnight for my RNY but still gained 6 pounds of water weight when I weighed the third day (day after I got home). I stayed off the scales for a few days and all the water weight was gone within a week.
To tell you the truth, my belly was SO BLOATED from all the gas that stepping on the scale was the LAST thing I felt like doing!! I felt nine months pregnant, but thankfully that was gone within a week too!!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery! You will do fantabulous!

Meg,
I did retain about 6 lbs of water, but it was gone in 3 days. Drink as much as you can sip, sip, sip, because water itself is a diuretic. And walk. I set a timer and walked the last 5-10 minutes of every hour I was up. Each time I did, I set a shot glass in the kitchen.
During my walks, as I made a lap through the kitchen, I'd take a sip from the shot glass. The water in the shot glass had to be gone before I sat down. The first couple days that shot glass was a challenge. Then I changed it to an Irish shotglass (2 oz). Then a juice cup. (4 oz) . Oh and I put a bit of fresh lemon juice in the water cuz the plain water felt too heavy in my gut. Gina said it was a pH thing.
Swinging geckos and labradoodles for you. Keep a Ruthie attitude!

I put on over 30 pounds of water weight, but I had five surgeries (and spent a week unconscious with fluids getting pumped in and out to try to clean out an internal infection) and was in the hospital for a month, so I'm guessing that's not typical. I never retained water after my c-sections though.
