mini gastric bypass??

So I just heard of someone having a mini gastric bypass... I have never heard of that before.  Can anyone give me any info on it?

I don't really know anything about it. I want to say we may have a LW here that either has one has been recently revised to something else from a MGB. I could have that confused and thinking of someone on the DS board though. My surgeon does about all the most popular WLSs and he does a hybrid of his own, but not the MGB.

What is the hybrid he does? That sounds interesting.  I really feel that one day someone is going to come up with a perfect solution, whether it's surgery or medicine or some way to treat obesity that is effective without risk, or at least very little risk.
As far as the mini bypass, I haven't heard anything real positive about it but there are some who have it that are very happy.  The fact that there is only one surgeon that does it makes me pause as if it were effective and safe I would think more surgeons would do it.  I think it may be done in another country, too.

He won't do a stand alone VSG with the tiny sleeve. He expreimented 10 years ago with a stand alone sleeve but the sleeve was the same size he makes DS (60f bougie) and his patients regained their weight.  Now, he does a DS sleeve but puts a permanent band around the sleeve to keep the restriction longer. Still a restrictive only WLS.

He also does revisions from band and RNYs to DS but gives the patient the option to put a band around the sleeve. He wants to give the patient the best chance at long term success, according to him. I don't neccessarily agree with him about putting the band around the sleeve but that's what he offers revisions and higher BMI folks he has to do a 2 part DS for.

 Well  I pretty much had what amounts to a mini bypass - a far larger pouch than most and  a " proximal"  ( ie minimal ) amount  bypassed of the intestine .   I was an extreme lightweight .  

Im NOT  happy with the results .   I don't think the surgery was  effective enough especially in the long term.  I could EASILY go back to my former eating habits and regain  most or all the weight  .. I choose not to through daily OA meetings and eating  with discipline .  

But I WISH i was twenty or thirty lbs lighter , frankly .  Unfortunately  im probably too light to revise  grrr . 

If I had a chance to do over  and I REALLY  hada choice (  I was darn LUCKY to get an RNY  frankly  )  Id choose a DS  ABSOLUTELY .

At 125 pounds, as tall as you are, you wish you were 20-30 pounds lighter?  Do you think you would be healthier?  I guess I get a little concerned when i hear you say that.  I think that vigilance in good eating and exercise is just going to be our reality.  Heck, I could get even down to a normal BMI, I would be so happy!  Please don't let the 12 year olds in magazines skew your thinking that being anorexic would be preferable.

MGB is a controversial procedure, to say the least.  The American Bariatric Societies are not exactly enthusiastic to endorse it on their webpages.  Apparently, one surgeon developed the procedure and only a few others have adopted it after being trained by him.  I'm not certain of all the ins-and-outs on the reasons why it is so contentious, but when I asked my surgeon about it he shot it down pretty quickly. 

The MGB was developed by Dr. Rutledge in the Carolinas.  If you google it, you find tons of info.  I seem to recall he had to move away from the Carolinas, he has questionable practices, and the procedure is not approved by the Bariatric orgs. I know this and more because I looked into the procedure (and the doc) twice, once years ago, and once recently.  Why?

A woman who was a dear friend several years ago (she moved to FL and we lost touch) is very high on Dr. Rutledge.  She AND her daughter both had the MGB probably 15 years ago.  She (the mom, not the daughter) works for him as a patient liaison.  She is very active on MGB boards, particularly the boards associated with Dr. Rutledge's (and his associates') practices.

 What  is CALLED  a mini-bypass  is actually done  by that same doc in Las Vegas  for 10,000 cash or thereabouts .   I looked into it  because I thought insurance would never pay for me.   There are  LOTS of complications due to where  its hooked in ... I think it ignores the gallbladder or something essential  like that .  

He only takes patients who are young and healthy and  are really low risk -  despite that theres a high rate of complications and complaints particularly a few years post .   He may have been  encouraged to stop practicing in North Carolina  and leave with his license intact ..thats the way it looks from the record anyway .

He has interesting advertising on you tube - patient testimonials etc... very up to date .  Too bad his surgery cant back up the advertising .  

I wouldn't mess with  that procedure on a BET .

I personally don't know anything about it, but ShortyPants on the LW boards had one.  If you can contact her she might can tell you more about it.  I haven't seen her on the boards in a while so I don't know how she is doing.  I believe the doctor others were talking about was the one who performed hers.

Good luck.  Is there a reason you do not want a regular RNY?  I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about it.  That is what I had and I am thrilled with my WLS.
