metallic taste in mouth - foods taste strange

I've been absent from the boards for awhile, but I am hoping you won't mind my coming back to ask you about a strange thing I've been experiencing that has me a little concerned.

For the past several weeks I have had a strange metallic taste in my mouth when I eat or drink.  And along with the metallic taste, the flavor of foods is very dulled down. It even happens when I drink water.  I am not taking any new medications and nothing else has changed that I am aware of.  Have you heard of this in WLS patients?

Thank you guys.

That sounds like the ketosis most of us have when we are newly post-op. It indicates you're burning fat up in your body, which is a good thing. Are you low carbing again? The best treatment is to keep drinking your water and fluids as much as you can to keep the ketones washed out of your system.

If it isn't ketosis, maybe thru****hink there's a mouthwash (that tastes nasty, of course) for that.

Good to see you back. You're always welcome.

Hi Gina :)
It's good to be back here. I knew you would be the first one to respond back to me. You are an angel put here from heaven to keep this place together.

This taste thing is a mystery. I would have been more alarmed about it, but I assumed it was from chewing too much sugarfree minty gum in the evenings (it keeps my mouth busy).  Then I cut that out a couple weeks ago and the taste thing is still here. I remember my side effects from ketosis and, while I wish I was in ketosis now, I don't think I am.  None of the other symtoms are present (smelly, dark urine, bad breath and weight loss). I will have to look at the thrush descriptions again. I read last night that it can indicate a neurological degenerative problem (which I have), but it's usually associated with Parkinson's or M.S. (which I don't have, thank God).  One medical website said it could point to a severe B12 deficiency.  I have been giving myself the B12 shots every month, but that sounded an alarm for me to go get my numbers checked.

Thanks for always being here. It sounds like you might finally be enjoying spring in your area. I can just picture all the flowering trees and daffodils and flowering shrubs you are seeing on your walk around the lake. I used to live in D.C. and I always tell my husband that I could easily live there again if his job took us there.  I miss those cherry blossoms!

I had thrush right after surgery.  Is your tongue coated in white?  If so, go to the Dr and get tablets that you dissolve in your mouth 5x a day for about 10 days.  Cures it.  It was pretty awful when everything already tasted bad no matter how much I brushed my teeth.

Hello Price! It's good to see you.  Thanks for getting back to me on this.

Thrush. I remember my husband catching that from one of the kids when they were babies.  I will read about it again to see. The only thing is that my tongue could not be pinker. In fact now that I'm thinking about it, it is unusually pinky red and uniformly pink all over, which is unusual, isn't it?  I can add this to my side effects of whatever this is.

it's good to see you looking so slim and trim!

I've never had thrush but I get the Ketosis metalic taste when i'm eating low carb.  I also get that metalic taste occasionally after I eat my chocolate calcium chews from BA.  I don't know why it happens sometimes but not all the time.  It feels like sucking on nickles!  YUCK.

Some of the chewable and powdered vitamins have a definite metallic after-taste.

The new Celebrate ENS Protein + Multi powder does it for me.I can't even choke down the stuff some times. Luckily I just bought a few samples.

Yuck!  I never know how a chewable is going to taste until I've bit into it, the taste is flooding my mouth, and there's just no going back!  Even if you spit it out, you can't get rid of the offending taste until every last granual and tainted bit of saliva is dissolved and washed down!  I know how comical I must look to others when I get a really bad one! my face contorts, winces and scruntches in funny ways.  Wouldn't it be hilarious to make a Youtube video montage of post WLS people and their expressions upon tasting all the offensive protein shakes, vitamins, etc. that we suffer through along the way?!  It would become an instant viral hit in the WLS world!

Thanks for the input.

Kathy,
you were one of the folks who urged me to not panic when my tumor problem came up.  I always think of you when I get oneline, kinda hoping to see your posts.

Pregnant women get the feeling of sucking on a penny or a nickel.  I've heard them say that.
And I've heard women going through menopause sometimes get that sensation along with hot flashes.

I get that taste when I eat too much spinach.....

I'm no doctor, so I'll just swing geckos and labradoodles to send healing energy your way.
