kristie alley NSV...not winning
So I feel really bad for Kristie Alley last night on dancing with the stars... I always think she would be the perfect candidate for a VSG...maybe it's me ..but don't you guys see people all the time now and think...OMG they would do so well with WLS...of course I don't say anything to anyone because it's a personal decision...and I would NEVER preach...but secretly I think how much their lives would improve and their health if they did what we did...do you guys ever think this?...like Oprah...or
some of the heavy men actors who have everything but their health going for them....just a topic of conversation...I will be a year out on Friday and my life is daily life is completely transformed...

I totally agree..I have often wondered the same thing not only for the benefit of loosing the weight but also the keeping it off part that they and we all struggled with. I think WLS is still taboo and celeberties "try" to avoid taboo..I think as WLS increases we will start seeing some of these celebs jumping on the wagon as well...
What bothers me most is people in their 30's that are over weight. I so wish I'd had my surgery years ago when my body was in better shape and my skin still had some bounce back in it.

I find myself looking at folks and thinking about how much different their lives could be. But of course, it has to be their choice. Then I look at folks who have made the decision and not followed through with the plan. That is even sadder. I have all my heavier friends telling me about how much weight they have lost (and still have to lose) and I tell them how proud of them I am. And I am, I just remember doing the same thing myself, over and over again. Each time telling myself, this time will be different.
So this time, for me, will be different.

I think Oprah's smart enough to know that like Star Jones she would lose her viewership's sympathy if she had surgery .
even if she claimed to lose the weight " naturally " I don't think they would buy it or have patience with her anymore and I think her popularity and scads of money every year and rating s simply mean more to her than 50 extra lbs .

YES...I have friends who are where I was a year ago and still struggling with being over 50 or near 50...obese...insulin resistant...perimenopausal...stressed by work ...kids ....life...money...have no time for themselves or can't figure out how to MAKE time....and I have no idea what to tell them...
they are TRAPPED in an endless cycle which can lead to illness and death...I really don't know how they will lose the weight...and I say nothing because my answer may not the theirs..but I really don't know if there is another way for people like us...SEAVIEW

So glad you posted this thread. I want to stop every fat woman I see and say that there is a way out, if you are willing to work with the surgery. I am too early out to be so certain of myself, but I never had this fabulous tool. Even if I wanted to binge, I CAN'T. What a relief. I have stayed clear of sugar and slider foods. I have found things to distract me from thinking abut food.
I am exercising. I know I wouldn't be doing the gym, if I didn't have the help of hauling around 60 fewer pounds. This time the cycle is a positive one. The more I exercise, the more I lose. The more I lose, the easier it is to exercise. YEAH!!
When I get a chance, I share that I had VSG. I used to think my lasik eye surgery was my best gift to myself, now I think it is my sleeve. Both surgeries have transformed my life for the better.

I didn't get to see Kirstie dancing last night. She rocked last week and was actually one of the best dancer's out there (of the non-professionals). She had charisma, ***** and went all out for the show -- I've always thought of her as a train wreck of sorts because she always puts her weight loss attempts all out for the public to see -- and thought she was set up to be the train wreck of the season on DWTS, too. Come to think of it...I'm not so sure Wendy Williams isn't in that role!! LOL
I'm quite surprised we have not heard of a "WL surgeon to the stars"! Maybe it's an E! show in the making????
I am ever-impressed by Al Roker and find myself looking at his NBC video segments on his experience for motivation. I read an interview somewhere recently about Aretha not EVER admitting to WLS but had some sort of surgery and dropped the pounds. She has lots of health issues that you would think could be easily resolved... maybe not.

What I have learned along this journey, is that one has to be ready for WLS and the commitment to new lifestyle has to be present. It is such an individual and private decision that I would never presume to tell someone about it, unless they asked. There is a woman at work, who has thought about WLS, but she needs to make some major changes, before she can even be referred for the surgery. For one thing, she is still smoking, so that is a cause for denial. She is trying to eat better and has been trying to be more active, but if she doesn't quit smoking, she won't be able to do it. She has been watching my progress with a very keen eye and does ask me appropriate questions from time to time. I hope that she can quit smoking, so that she can the surgery done.
Most of the time, when I tell people that I am weighing, measuring, and tracking my food on daily basis, and exercising 4-5 times/week, their eyes glaze over. This takes a lot of work and time to make the WLS successful. I think successful people are mindful everyday of their lives of food patterns and the need to exercise.
Celebrities are in a different world. Everything they do, whether successful or failed, is up for the public scrutiny.
