Will they cancel surgery for....... X POST!

The hospital called yesterday asking a million questions regarding my health etc. One of the questions was my current weight. I informed the lady I was on the 2 week liquid diet so it's lower than normal. It was 187. BMI 34. Normally my BMI is 36 but I have lost 7 lbs. due to this diet. Last evening I got a call from my nutritionist saying she got a call from the hospital regarding my weight and BMI being out of range for approval. I already received approval from BCBS. My NUT said they may give me a hard time at the hospital because of my weight. She didn't sound confident that they won't cancel. She told me to continue the liquid diet and to show up next Tuesday for surgery. I am literally scared to the point where I feel sick to my stomach. I'm shaky, thinking I did all this for nothing. It's not even insurance, it's the hospital! What would you do? Can they cancel my surgery because I'm following the doctors orders and losing the weight pre op? HELP!!!!!!

Also posted on main forum but was told to post here as well!

That would be absolutely insane- who the heck wouldn't drop weight on a liquid diet.  Can you get  more in your diet (calories, fat) .mine didn't require pre op liquid phase, so I don't know what that means for you.  I would explain the lack of logic- if you show up for surgery and they hassle you.  WTF do people think. Perhaps that is why people are getting away from liquid diets to prepare- just go light the day before- Ugh!

If your insurance is approved I can't imagine that the hospital has any input.  I have BCBS and they went by my starting weight.

I wouldn't try to lose weight just in case. (don't worry...it will come off after surgery)  I'd drink high calorie liquids, eat real pudding, etc.

I have BCBS and they went by my initial weight.  I can't see the hospital having input unless they are afraid now they won't get their $$ due to your weight being down.  Ugg.

I'm swinging for you.  I would try to do both of what you are suppose to do, stay on the liquid and not lose weight.  Add another protein drink or other liquids, just not high fat ones.  They want to reduce the fatteness of your liver so adding cream to stuff won't help, but another low fat, low carb shake will add more calories and not more fat.

I agree with the advice above. When is the surgery scheduled? Do you have a lawyer friend who can follow up with the hospital? I don't see how they can deny you treatment when you have an approval letter from the insurance.

Call your insurance and confirm approval. Get the pre-auth number and call back to the hospital & confirm that you have approval & give them the auth number. The hospital cannot cancel your surgery if insurance has approved and your surgeon believes you to be a good candidate for surgery.

I too had BCBS, and was below weight when surgery finally came around (dropped 29 pounds pre-op). But they went by my initial weight, so it was fine.

I was told that when the pre-check in call comes, they ask about weight to give the anesthesiologist a general range for you... it could easily be possible that the person on the phone knew just enough to be dangerous about the qualifications for WLS, but not enough to be accurate.

Uuuh, that seems pretty ridiculous to me, but I guess you could always adopt a milkshake-and-ice-cream diet?
