What am I doing wrong....

Hi everybody, this is my first post on this site. Another poster told me to drop by, and boy I'm glad I did! I am having this same issue too. I lost all the weight that I lost the first 10 days after surgery. I actually lost a little more than my ticker shows, I've lost about 18lbs. I guess that's not bad for not even a month out, but like I said it was the first 10 days, as soon as I got home from Mexico, and started eating a proper post-op diet...Bam....Nothing, no weight loss. I get plenty of water and about a week ago started to try to bump up my protein, but I'm finding that hard. I think I'm gonna try some more though. I have not gained any, except for when I was constipated, I took care of that and lost 3lbs(I thought that was hilarious),but I havent lost any either in about 2 weeks. Anyway I know what you're going through. To me, it feels like time is going so slow. I know it hasnt been that long but it seems like forever!! Good luck to you all!!

I only strive to be, the kind of person my dogs think I am!

Had my surgery on the same day and I lost 18 lbs.  Heads up---we can do this...its just our bodies catching up with all the stress put on it.  I remember that when I ate foods, the weight seemed to come of better...I guess it was enough to tell my body it wasn't starving, and that it was okay to drop pounds cause food was coming in.  I am still easing my way to regular foods...but I struggle with protein for sure cause I don't do shakes...and well unless its liquids no qaunity of it's going in.  I have been taking nibbles of a very soft protein bar.. ..and my s/f decaf chai arrived, so I plan on trying that tomorrow...that will help get protein in.  I remember my routine, just have to find new products since lots of my standbys have been d/c since I was eating them BB (before babies).  Good luck!

I remember stalling at about 2 weeks, straight through to my 3 week post-op visit. Then a few days later I got on the scale, and BAM!!!! Down 6#!!!! It was awesome.

My advice is predictable. DON'T step on the scale for a few days and see how that goes. Once your body recalculates, that scale will move! Good luck.

It's water retention. Trust me on this. You can't eat 300-500 calories a day and not be losing weight. But you can be retaining water so that weight loss doesn't show up on the scale.

Also 9-10 pounds in 3 weeks is actually an okay loss for a lightweight. Not spectacular but not crappy either. I think I lost 11 pounds in my first 3 weeks and I got to a normal BMI in 6.5 months.

At my one month appt. with my surgeon (at 5 weeks out)  I told him I was glad I'd gotten past the phase of thinking he'd made those incisions and not done a thing in there but mess around.  He grinned and said, "It caught up with you?"  I replied, "Yup. It's starting to."  and he grinned and said, "It always does."

Give it time and follow the rules.  Remember we lightweights will always lose slower than than the rest and it's NOT a RACE.  :-)

I'm almost 8 weeks out and have just now lost 20 lbs. since surgery, which means an AVERAGE of 2.5 lbs. per week and which also means I may be able to reach goal within a year after all.   That's nothing to sneeze at so I'm happy and grateful for other LW's that said the same things they've been saying to you.  LOL

You're where you are suppposed to be... everything is fine... be patient...

hang tough!  the weight will come off!  and you'll get to the point that you'll get dressed and think....wow....these pants fit fine last week!  now i can take them off without unbuttoning them!  you'll get smaller ones and a week or so later.....same thing....they're too big as well!  then one day you'll go to your closet with a huge rubbermaid container and stand there in your undies and try on one thing after another throwing the things that are too big in the container.....then....when you've gone through it all.....you get the smallest thing out...put it on....and go shopping!!

don't let a number on the scale determine your mood for the day!  work your tool!  you'll do great, you'll look great and you'll feel great!!

sending blessings your way today!!
Blessings,  J

Thank you so much everyone for your comments and suggestions! What would I do if I didn't have this site? I would probably be home miserable and feeling like a failure!! I added another shake last night (choked it down) and drank more water before I went to bed (choked it down) and I feel a little better today.  I'll post again after my three week on Thursday!

I'm so glad you posted this, Amy! And I'm grateful for the wealth of responses. My situation's almost parallel to yours, aside from the fact that I'm now 5 weeks out from surgery.

After losing 20 lbs (pre-op diet and immediately post op), I'm only losing about 1/2 pound per week. So disheartening! But I met with my internist, dietician, and trainer on Monday. In short, they agreed that I've gone into that dreaded "starvation mode." I need to 1) stick to high-protein choices (including at least 1 shake per day); 2) up my water intake; and 3 (most important) add weight training to my exercise routine. We'll see how that works out...I've got a Jillian Michaels DVD that I'll slide into the player later today. And I'll let you know how things turn out. Hope you'll do the same.

Thank you for commenting.  I am so frustrated. I weighed this morning and I am acutally UP 1/2 a pound. What?? I know that I am probably not getting in enough calories, or water or exercise. Those are all three factors that only I can change. I am excited that tomorrow is my first MD follow up appt so I should be able to start some foods. Maybe that will help up the calories a bit. Right now I am trying to do at least 2 40g protein shakes a day, but I've been doing liquids for five weeks now and I just can hardly choke them down.  I'll let you know what the doc says tomorrow!
