Low BMI for surgery

I will be having surgery with my BMI lower than 35 if I keep losing on this liquid diet. I'm down to 187 lbs. Seems pretty silly now. I am not hungry anymore and have no cravings for food MOST of the time. I do get cravings mostly at night. I HATE this liquid diet. Now I'm sick with a sore throat, sinus cold and bad headache. Wondering if I should get put on antibiotics before surgery. Prob have sinus infection. What do you think? I have my pre op physical tomorrow with my PCP. If surgery were to be cancelled because I'm sick, I wouldn't do this again. I think my immune system is taking a beating from not eating and that's why im feeling like this. Anyway what was your BMI going into surgery? Just curious. Thanks and have a great week!

I would say mention the sinus pressure to the Dr to see if you are beginning a slight infection, you can still usual have surgery with a cold, as long as your not running a temp (thats what I was told at least).  The good thing about losing some weight on the liquid diet is that it is less to drop later.  You can't sustain on a liquid diet, so if you came off and went back to eating your weight would pick back up.  Most of us choose WLS because we need the tool to help us drop and sustain our loss- normal to drop some weight on the liquids (wouldnt worry much about your BMI dropping some). I think my BMI was around 34 -35 when I had my revision.  Good luck!

My BMI was around what yours is the day of surgery. I got sick with a sinus infection too. antibiotics are ok but do not let them give you steriods. My doctor would not do my surgery the day I was supposed to because I had been given steriods at urgent care the Saturday before my surgery on Monday. I had to stay on the liquid diet another week before my surgery could be rescheduled.  I am 17 months out and would do it again.  All my heart problems have gone away. I am no longer on any medicine now I was on alot before. Only you can decide what is best for you. Hang tough. Hope you feel better soon. ~
