Did you have DS and are a lightweight?

After a few days of research this is what I have come up with:

Dr. Pomp- He was taken off of dsfacts.com due to being a "bait and switcher".  Apparently he likes to do revisions in 2 seperate surgeries. And sometimes you may come out of surgery with just a sleeve with never a chance of ds.

Dr Sudan- Is very experienced in revisions and will perform on a LW.

Dr. Peters- in PA may be an option but only does open not lap.

Dr. Teel- in Dayton, Oh, does lap and maybe LWs.

Dr. Elariny- in Va is a possiblity for LW and does lap.

Feel free to chime in!

Dr. Elariny will do LWs and he does revisions laparoscopically. Are you self pay or will you be looking for insurance?   He's worth every penny.

I will gain 15 to 20 lbs to get insurance to cover it. That should bring my bmi to 35 with comorbids.
How long did it take to get in with him? I will have to drive 7 hrs but want to get on this asap.

I went to his info session in May, had a consult in June, finished all my tests in July and had surgery in August. Insurance approval took about a week. Dr E does charge over an above what insurance covers through a separate company and it's kind of costly.

Okay, since Bev has not responded to my email or to my husbands, can you point me to her reponse about this or is this from others on the board?

I know of TWO revisions that Pomp did on the DS board who were not completed as a full DS but left with a VSG. Two in one year. So he is tarred as a "bait and switcher" based on that? What we don't know is what went on in the operating room. Why he decided it was safer to stop? Sometimes, esp once we are under, we do have to rely on a surgeon's skill. Something may have happened once a person is under. That's why they also have a caveat in the paperwork that says they can do an open surgery even if it's scheduled as a lap. In case there are problems.

To be honest, I prefer a careful surgeon. One who stops rather than put my life at risk just to finish. Esp if I have massive scarring involved. My husband has a shunt and could have easily ended up a 2 stager even tho his was a virgin surgery simply due to scarring from other surgeries not wl related but Pomp was able to finish his on one surgery. He gave us a 99% guarantee, not 100% and I was fine with that. I do not consider that a bait and switch.

Others will disagree with me and thats fine. I just hate to see a fine DS surgeon dissed this way. I know you are just repeating what you have heard.

I had a BMI of 36 (I think).  Dr Bonanni did mine.  He is in Warminster Pa.  I LOVE him!!  I searched around.  I started with Dr Peters in Scranton (saw him on your list).  He is awesome as well.  I didn't care for the idea of having an Open surgery either, really wanted a Lap.  But I was willing to sacrifice and have it open if it was my only choice.  My insurance would pay for me to have the DS, but Dr Peters didn't accept ins (at that time, don't know if that's changed).  By damn it, if I can get insurance to pay...I was going to!  That is when I found Dr Bonanni.  He was in the stage of doing his first 200 surgeries when I found him.  He is an hour and a half away from me, but well worth the trip!!!!!! Not sure if he does revisions though.  If your BMI is only a 30, a sleeve wouldn't be a bad option for you.  That is the route I would've taken, but I had the DS to cure my diabetes!  Good luck!!  I'm sure you will find someone!

My stats:
Starting weight 234 lbs    Height 5 ft 6 in
Goal in 7 months (127 lbs)
Currently: 120-123 lbs
Tops Small   Bottoms size 2!!!!

~ Please note, it has been reported that Dr. Bonanni is no longer performing Duodenal Switch surgery on patients with less than 150 lbs to lose, unless they are diabetic or have a condition requiring NSAIDs.

I just saw this on dsfacts.

RNY on 09/14/10 with
There is Dr. O'Malley in Rochester(he started the lap procedure)..he does the DS( I am not sure about revisions..wouldn't hurt to ask. Also there is Dr.Hill in Saranac Lake(Adirondack Medical Center)..again, I am not sure if they do revisions or not.

I was 2 weeks away from having Doc Peters do the DS for me(my BMI was 45)..we had a tragic financial problem soo I had to cancel. I then got insurance and ended up having RNY ( which I am very pleased with).
Good Luck in your search!

From what I've been reading, O'malley doesn't like to do ds as much as other wls.  He especially won't probably want to do it on a lightweight .
Dr. Hill is not a ds vetted surgeon.
