Having my 9 mo labs this week

I am scheduled to have my 9 month labs drawn this week and am concerned about three of the tests.  At my 3 month check, protein levels were low, liver enzymes were elevated.  At the 6 month check, protein levels were still low and liver enzymes were elevated slightly more with the endocrinologist making a comment about etiology to the surgeon.  Surgeon is not sure why this is so, since I consume 100 grams of protein most days. Neither dr. is sure why the liver enzymes are elevated.  In addition to the supplements I take, I also take Synthroid (hypothroidism) and Axid and Carafate (for Gerd and marginal ulcer I had @ 6 weeks out).  I can't seem to eat anything without taking both meds.  The only other thing I take is Lortab (1 1/2-2 a day) for severe arthritis in my knee.  Is there something I am taking or not taking that would improve my labs? I read two books written by bariatric surgeons that said the kind of protein should be whey isolate or concentrate not hydrolyzed protein to be effective.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When you get your labs make sure albumin and prealbumin are on them. Those 2 are an even better indicator of your protein and nutritional status than protein serum. If your albumin is in the 4's and your prealbumin is near the top of the range, don't worry. But, whey protein isolates are the most bio-available form of protein. I still have to get 100+ grams of protein via protein shakes to keep my numbers up. You may want to go to this amount your first year or 2 and see if that helps your numbers. My 2 favorite protein powder brands are Syntrax Nectar (chocolate, strawberry mousse and cappuccino flavors) and IDS MultiPro (vanilla-cinnamon to add coffee to). You can order samples from www.Vitalady.com and see if there are brands and flavors that you like more than others.

I understand that the thyroid medications have to be taken away from all other vitamins and meds, so timing might be an issue?

High liver enzymes are completely normal for someone losing weight as fast as we do. If you want to take another supplement to help you liver, try 300-600mg of milk thistle a day. I take 300mg in the morning and 300mg in the evening.

Good luck with lab draw...stay as hydrated as possible this week.

No  suggestions for you but wanted to let you know that my DH, who weighs 140 on a good day, is 57 years old and doesn't need or take ANY meds also has high liver enzymes.  No doc has ever found a reason and they are not concerned. Maybe it will be the same for you.

Thanks for your suggestions.  I will make sure they test for the albumin/pre-albumin test.  I know I need to use more whey protein isolate..it just doesn't taste very good to me.  I will try some of the samples from Vitalady to see if I can find something I can like well enough to drink all the time.
