Reactive hypoglycemia or dehydration?

Ok..... Im hoping someone can help me out here.

Here's what Ive been experiencing.  I wake up in the AM, have 1 - 2 cups of protein coffee.  Then I go to the gym.  Drink water after exercise.  Approx 30 min  after I get home from the gym I eat either a greek yogurt or protein bar.  Ive never been big on breakfast.

Well lately, Ive been experiencing severe shakiness after exercing (treadmill) around 20 min or so.  I normally walk 30 - 45 min.

I had lunch with a friend today ...... she had WLS 6 yrs ago.   I told her I was going to make an appt with my PCP to have my Thyroid level checked again.  Its been all of of whack since my surgery and I wondered if thats what was causing my shakiness.  She said it sounds like RH.

I *thought* RH happened at 2+ yrs or so..... Im only 1 yr out.   I *thought* RH happened after eating carbs...... thats not the case either.

Ive been really lacking in the fluids department.  Could it be dehydration?  It only happens in the morning and only during exercise.

Any thoughts?    Thanks,  Cindy

I had a couple of similar episodes and I really think they were related to lack of fluids. One thing you might try is eating some carbs before going to the gym. I always eat instant oatmeal of cream of wheat before going on a run. I think getting some good carbs in before exercising is a good idea. Also, you may want to limit the coffee to 1 cup before exercising. That could be contributing to it.

Do you have access to a blood glucose machine?  Check your blood glucose level the next time you feel like that.

Yes, I do.  Hubby is diabetic.  Thanks, will check it the next time the shakiness starts,  Cindy

Dizziness associated with exercise is almost always either dehydration or lack of calories...

MacMadame,  Ive really been lacking in the fluids, so that probably is my problem.  I will check my blood glucose the next time I feel like that though and if it continues, will make an appt to see my doctor.  Thanks!   Cindy

Cindy, RH can start as soon as 2 months after surgery.

See my post here: Reactive Hypoglycemia, also known as "late dumping"

I have several articles and there is a slideshow from the Joslin Diabetes Clinic on RNY RH.

While you are excercising why not try drinking G2 instead of water. G2 has less sugar and still has electrolytes you need.

OK, I dont think its RH.   I went to my sisters this morning and walked on her treadmill.  After about 25 minutes the shakiness started.  I checked my glucose level..... it was 78.  I checked it again 30 min later... it was 81.  So I think the culprit is dehydration.  I WILL increase my fluids.  Thanks everyone!  Cindy
