I feel like I'm setting myself up to fail!

I am only a 10 days out. I was put on mushy foods as of Thursday. But I was eating chicken salad yesterday but not eating chicken. But after chatting with an OH Friend. She said her surgeon said no veggies unlessed they are steamed....OOP!! I completly forgot! I didn't have much at most 7 baby bites. Not much at all...But then I also had 10 gold fish crackers I know I can have them but not just yet. I also was sucking on some hard candy. I had 3 pieces. Other than that I have been sticking with this whole diet. I don't have head hunger. I have been really good. Well what I thought was good. Its not like I was craving these items I just needed something to chew! That is why I had gold fish. (plus a small reward to myself) And the chicken salad. I just wasn't even thinking. I am only 10 days out and down about 15 pounds. But I feel like my weight loss could of been more had I not of eaten these items. Sorry to vent....

I know I can't go back and change what I did eat. But the items I did eat I didn't have to eat. I allowed myself to eat them. I'm good at telling myself NO! Tomorrow is a new day. I guess I will just start off new tomorrow!!

Thanks for listening.

What kind of surgery did you have?  I would be very careful sucking on hard candy.  I'd be so scared it might slip down and get stuck.    You could put the chicken salad in a blender.   It should taste delicious that way and go down very easy.

If you need to chew on something buy some jerky and chew to your hearts content and then spit it out.  It got me through many days of needing to chew on something during those beginning weeks.

I'm not even going to comment on the gold fish.....LOL

Roz, I never ever thought about jerky!  That is brilliant.

Hang in there......these are some tough weeks but I truly feel that this will help us break some of the dependence we have on food.  Plus, getting sick right now on things is something you DO NOT want.  Tomorrow is a new day!

April, as a sleever, you are on a slightly different schedule than others (more like a DS'er is since we share the tummy part)

Don't know what surgery your OH friend had but unless she was also a sleever, her schedule will be different. Also different surgeons have different plans.

Example, my husband and I both had the DS but different surgeons (LLLLLOOOONNNGGGG story), he was discharged from the hospital on soft foods, I was discharged from the hospital on clear liquids. And yet no difference in how we reacted to the surgery. Just a difference in how our surgeon's did things.

At 10 days out, the goldfish probably won't hurt you but be careful as your tummy is still swollen and anything with a sharp edge can hurt it so chew carefully. Plus they are empty carbs.

The hard candy, well I can't blame you there but think about this...IF it was sugar free, it can give you the runs. Too much of the sugar alcohols can be horrid on your system. Instead of hard candy, try a protein snack. I know it doesn't taste the same but it's better for you. But if you must have the hard candy, limit yourself...

This is a lifetime tool, so you are relearning how to eat, this is NOT a diet, it's now a way of life. Diet implies a beginning and an end...there is no end for this. We have the different phases like the early phase where we lose lots of weight, the middle phase where we slow down, and the end where weight hardly budges and then maintanence where we finally end up and stay by by keeping our head on straight and using what we've learned thru the losing process.

Don't beat yourself up over one day. You are still early out and still learning to use this new tool.

Thank you all so much! I'm so glad my OH friend said that about the veggies...I didn't even remember. I wish my surgeons office had a post op class just to remind us about info. But all of you are right. This is just relearning how to eat the right foods. Yes the candy was sugar free. Only 30% of us sleevers have dumping. I don't think I am one of them. But you never know I guess. I haven't had enough sugar to dump. The gold fish crackers. I was told later on are OK. just don't over eat them. If you suck on them they pretty much turn to mush after words. A good friend who is a nurse she did the RNY she eats them. At night for a snack. But I know I'm still early out. I chew everything so much its crazy. I'm don't want nothing to get stuck.

Thanks again all of you. Really means alot to me you took the time to respond to me. I just don't want to mess anything up. I know 15 pounds is good. Its only been 10 days.

April, Sleevers like DS'ers do NOT dump...we have all the parts of our stomach, altho we are missing massive amounts of one part, we still have some of that part. We have the esophageal sphincter at the top which leads into the stomach, we have about 2-6 ozs left of our stomach itself depending on your surgeon, and we have the pyloric sphincter at the bottom. The pyloric sphincter is what makes sleevers and DS'ers so different from RNY'ers. They no longer have theirs and THAT is why they dump.

Whoever told you that sleevers dump was using the RNY playbook.

30% of sleevers dump??? Where did that information come from? I thought that was about the percentage of people who had RNY's that experienced dumping.

Just get back on track and if you're not sure what to eat, call your surgeon's office and speak with your nutritionist.

Some people are able to get a chewing sensation from chewing on ice or sugar-free popsicles.

Good luck to  you!!!

We all have made our own share of mistakes. The great part is tomorrow is a new day. This journey is about putting one foot infront of the other. Today you have to start a new. I have decided that on this journey there are certain rules that I am not willing to break commandments if you will. You need to find what you are willing to compromise and what you are not. I can live without a lot of things but chocolate is not one of them. I can live without ever drinking out of a straw and never having a pepsi again.  I can live without drinking and eating at the same time. There is no going back. But the road ahead is manageable. Each day at school our announcements are ended the same way....make it a great day or not the choice is yours. The choices we make on this journey effect our outcomes. I have made some good and some bad choices but over all my journey has been a successful one. I am no longer obese. I am no longer on a ton of medication everyday. I went through hell to get here. Nearly lost my life with a bowel obstruction 3 days after surgery but I AM HERE. I am willing to let my tool be my guide. Every stride you make in the right direction is a good one.  Don't be so hard on yourself. This is your journey. The choices are yours. Take care and God Bless.

Big hugs!

This is a journey, and we need to learn to change our eating habits. You are aware and realized what you have done, so bru**** off and do what you need to do! Keep posting and get support!

Congrats on your success so far!
