HOME...and feeling better already
I got home yesterday from the hospital after RNY. I spent one night there and was so happy to finally be able to rest in my own bed!
I admit that I did wake up after surgery and wonder "what have I done" but each day is getting better. Those thoughts were based on the "fat me" worrying about thanksgiving dinner, eating out with friends, etc. But laying there in the hospital bed I came to the earnest conclusion that my health is much more important than worrying about what I won't be eating.
If it wasn't for the gas pains I would feel down right peachy. I don't think they warn you how uncomfortable this part of it really is. I was up a bunch last night walking and taking hot showers, both seemed to help. I finally got back to sleep around midnight and when I woke up at 4am I felt half as bloated as before. ahhh.
The surgeon's nurse called to check on me and thankfully told me that I could stop the liquid stool softeners and just mix in some benefiber. First the stuff bubbled up and tasted like dishsoap and second....well, I think it was too much for me. Let's just say there were a few close calls!
But Iam feeling better everyday and am excited for the next few months. I would be really interested to see what people ate on both the pureed stage and then the normal stage (even though that is like 6 weeks out). It has been so long since I have chewed real food, I'm a little nervous about that part!

Happy you are home and on the mend!
Your comment about not being warned for gas has me thinking -- I have read both good and bad stories of gas after surgery and I'm hopeful that those of us who are gassy geese pre-op have it better post op! I go to the surgeon one week from Monday and I think the anxiety is getting the best of me!!!!

Honestly Meg, if the gas pains are the worst part of all of this it is well worth it. I got up and showered this morning and put on some more 'form fitting' shirts and sweats. I think that helped the mental part of feeling all bloated. Seriously, yesterday I felt like you could have used me as a bouy. Today is a whole new story!! I never was much of a gassey goose beforehand, which may be why I'm having more issue with it post op.
I wish I could say the gas goes away. At least mine isn't painful (well, maybe to others). I still toot a lot, but always have.
Amazing how much better home makes us feel. I felt better every single day in the beginning and soon, it is a distant memory. It was a few weeks before I slept well. I spent the first nights in a recliner with a brief stop in the bed with lots of pillows propping me up.
Expect to be swollen for a while. It takes some time to get the healing done.
Congrats and welcome to the other side.

Congrats on your surgery! It sounds like you're doing good. Walking will help with the gas pains and I used some of those Gas-X strips too but I don't remember it being too bad. I wasn't on stool softeners though.
I loved the pureed stage and my faves were "chicken paste" (canned chicken with a little broth in the blender) and egg salad in the blender It's nice to have something not sweet after all of those protein shakes.
Best of luck to you!

Welcome home and welcome to the loser's bench.
Yeah, gas was my biggest issue. Walking and gas x wasn't even enough. Someone suggested rocking (esp while on the toilet) and having someone rub your back and both of those helped more than anything.
The only thing I had to do was prop extra pillows behind me to be able to sleep in my bed (I also had to keep one on my tummy as I have a cat that loves to sleep on my tummy and has for eight years).
Just keep resting, sipping, and walking. The weeks will pass and all of a sudden you will wonder where the time went.
