Consequence of Foley?

I'd never had one before this surgery and am curious now that it's been a month...good thing is that there is NO burning during urination, but there is a pretty constant sensation of discomfort at the point of entry that almost feels like when I have worn pants that were too tight in the past.  I had thought it would go away by now, but is it possible there is still tender tissue from the cath?  I meet with my surgeon on Thursday and am not sure he's the one I need to talk to, if I need to bring it up at all.

Sorry for having to bring up something like this... trying to guess at who i might private message over it was equally distressing. LOL

Thanks.
Ruthie

Not medical here...at all, but I think I'd start on some concentrated cranberry capsules right away to perhaps head off a UTI.  We do have some great medical folks here, I hope they'll chime in.

Hi Ruthie,
Sounds like the start of a UTI. I have had 2 of them so far. (not WLS yet) But when I get that feeling then I know one is starting. I drink A LOT of cranberry juice.. It does the trick for myself. One sign of a UTI is what you had said. Also if your pee is a cloudy. That is also another sign you  have a UTI.

I would briing it up to the surgeon. I'm sure he/she is used to dealing with this kind of stuff also.
Take care

I've been cathed for several sugeries and don't recall that sensation.  I would definately talk to the surgeon.  He may send you on to your PCP or just treat it himself.  Maybe between now and then the cranberry stuff would work?
I'm swinging for you.

I get that sensation EVERY time I am cathed. I normally end up with a UTI and a bladder infection, I would definately get some AZO cranberry pills and start flushing with fluids, more fluids than normal. I also have to drink alot of electrolytes, this will help out. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Ruthie,

Sounds like you either have the beginnings of a UTI and the cranberry capsules will help to ward it off...........OR  you may have some urethral trauma from the cathetar placement or removal.  So in other words you may have some urethral tears that are being bothered when you urinate. I'd definitely disucss it with your surgeon.  But in the mean time start with the cranberry pills!  Good luck hun!

IF you have a UTI brewing, cranberry capsules/cranberry juice works.

I suspect I avoided that altogether because for the first month, I was drinking diluted cranberry juice all the time.

I thank all y'all for your input.  I have never had a UTI and, since there's no burning when I tinkle, I didn't think it was that.  I know about cranberry juice, but it's not to be the coctail.  The sugars feed infection.  The straight stuff is terribly bitter but I can add Splenda.  :-)  Will get started today and mention it to the doc on Thursday.  This better not screw up my bath soaks.  I live in my tub (might have got back in too early though, huh) and the hospital will have to do some reconstructive surgery if I become susceptible to UTI's now.  Oh well... not going to go there just because I want someone to blame.  LOL

Yep Heather, a student removed it.  I could not believe that whole apparatus came out of tha***** bitty hole and I would not be surprised at all if there are tears.  But still, it doesn't sting or burn when "in use".  haha

Thanks again LW's.  You are da bomb!
